Mercian Studios

Executives from Hollywood giant Paramount have been over to the West Midlands ahead of plans for a huge new film studio.

Knight has been working to bring a studio to the region for nearly three years, and has investment, private and public sector backing in the bag.

He said US film-makers are keen to get to the UK - so much so, they are being turned away from our studios.

He said despite it being difficult to get the project, which also includes new bars and restaurants, over the line, he remained hopeful.

"We are getting closer, it has taken two and a half years. This has been going on since Peakys first took off and i thought 'we should build a studio in Birmingham'.

"The big American studios want to film in England because there is a tax incentive. The best actors, crews, technicians, post production is all the best"

"But Pinewood, Shepperton, even Elstree, you can't get in there. I thought just up the road you could build it. This has grown into the idea of a studio with related industries post production, animation, make up, everything, as well as restaurants, bars and so on."

"It's a destination where the industry, along with animation and computer games, my ambition is to create a place where families go for a night out and film-makers go to make things.

"Birmingham has always made things."

Knight remains tight-lipped on the likely location of the film studio, but BirminghamLive has previously reported it understands the NEC had been targeted.

That would be well placed to bring crews from London, with HS2 making it less than 40 minutes away, and also border the world-class gaming industry in Leamington.

"They want to come to England," he added. "They are happening in Northern Ireland with Game of Thrones, we aren't asking anyone for anything - it is completely commercial."

Knight revealed Paramount executives had brought in but nothing would be certain: "Until I put in front of them and say 'book now and avoid disappointment'."

He said conversations had already been taking place about specific films which could be filmed in the region.

He added: "They will be two years before they start shooting so I say 'tell us what you want and we can do it'.

"Already that is happening."

I do think that Peaky Blinders creator Steven Knight could be invaluable here. With him seriously proposing film studios at the NEC, close to both Birmingham and Coventry then it makes a lot of sense. And perhaps a nice shiny office block in Paradise?

Am I right in thinking that Channel 4 want a regional HQ as well as several smaller hubs? Do we know if there are any favourites for each of these or are they remaining tight lipped over it all?

Mercian Studios / News and opinions thread

So it seems Steven Knight has teamed up with Nikal to bring Mercian studios to fruition. Potential for two sites, one near the airport which we already knew but also one near Curzon street. That was my takeaway after a quick read through of this great article.

Steven Knight literally holding the flag for Birmingham on the international stage! Man I really hope this flourish he deserves it and Birmingham deserves it, we never get anything handed to us we usually graft for it, Steven Knight is that prime example.

I was also think Typhoon Wharf, it central, next to Digbeth and the Custard Factory and HS2, would be perfect for this project.

We keep using the phrase "game changer", but if this comes off this will be THE "GAME CHANGER" of all time for Birmingham and Greater Birmingham!!

Really hope they pick digbeth as the location, this will only make the custurd factory more prominent and going forward attract more media jobs

I thought the site at the NEC was agreed. That said a site in the city centre would be great

Yes I thought the site near the NEC was agreed but I don't think either has ben decided on. Or at least, that's my understanding.
