For the third time the capital repairs and important reconstruction of the Central stadium began in 1977 year due to decision to involve the capital of Ukraine in XXII summer Olympic Games football tournament in 1980 year. First of all a football field for matches of such level had to be prepared, that’s why drainage system was refined and the ground was completely substituted and sown by grass. A cup for Olympic flame was installed on original bays on the eastern stand. Also four light supports of 82 meters high were installed. There were 132 lamps each on 3,5 kW. Just during of this reconstruction two more football fields, discus throwing, shot-putting and hammer throwing courts, a new unique ski hill with cable-stayed system were constructed
They call that a reconstruction? I wouldn't refer to it as such, it was just a bunch of upgrades.

your stadium in bucharest has the exact same design; in fact it's a cheaper copy of this stadium

no it's not the same design because bucharest copied frankfurt

I'd rather say that is is the same family of roof designed (bucharest, warsaw and a lot of poland stadiums...)

But waht is the level of infrastructures? (airports, hotels...) some french medias point the fact ukraine is not ready to host correctly this euro. Are they right?

I read in the paper this morning that this project has cost €600million and counting. Is this true? If it is then: WTF Ukraine? You could have built an entirely new stadium for less than that.

This is not true... According to Vice Prime Minister of Ukraine for Euro-2012, Boris Kolesnikov, the reconstruction of the stadium will cost $500-550 million

it practically will be a new stadium, considering that only 2/3 of the upper tier remains...everything else is new. also, given the history of the stadium, i feel, it would have been a crime to raze it only to replace it with a cookie cutter, generic stadium.

as far as the cost: 1) it is always more expensive to do a reconstruction than to build new (especially when you're in the center of the city as is the case here, not somewhere off in the field where you don't have the issues of building in a dense urban environment) 2) probably a third of the cost of the stadium went to infrustucture improvement/development in the neighborhood where the stadium is located.

It also should be stated that this stadium is located on the place with very complicated lanscape with landslide danger on the soft ground (so-called Kievan sands). That adds to the cost of course. And yes, the cost includes some auxiliary infrastructure. For example only power distribution substation "Olimpiys'ka" which will serve nearly the whole Kyiv center costs $40 mln.

Very true. Its all part of the economic reality, and advantages that some have.

If other countries had access to hundreds of thousands of cheap labour, the result would be reduced construction costs.

Ukraine has not the highest manufacture cost hour average to say that!

I suspect too some corruption to inflate the final invoice.
