After 50-year battle, Uzbekistan eliminates malaria

Uzbekistan becomes the second country in 2018 to be certified malaria-free – Paraguay was certified in June – marking another milestone on the road to ending the disease for good. “Malaria No More commends the government of Uzbekistan for its resilience and determination to eliminate malaria once and for all. Uzbekistan’s decade-long commitment demonstrates the government’s recognition that malaria stood in the way of development, and that ridding the country of the disease was critical to improving economic outlook and protecting the health of its people,” said Martin Edlund, CEO of Malaria No More. Uzbekistan first eliminated malaria in 1961, but struggled to maintain elimination as malaria cases continued to flow in from neighboring countries.

Consultative meeting of Central Asian heads of state kicks off in Tashkent

The summit is attended by President of the Republic of Uzbekistan Shavkat Mirziyoyev, First President of the Republic of Kazakhstan Nursultan Nazarbayev, President of the Kyrgyz Republic Sooronbay Jeenbekov, President of the Republic of Tajikistan Emomali Rahmon and President of Turkmenistan Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov.

The second Consultative meeting of Central Asian heads of state has kicked off in Tashkent today.

High-level summit participants held a narrow-format meeting. President of Uzbekistan Shavkat Mirziyoyev addressed the meeting.

The head of our state sincerely welcomed the colleagues and noted that this meeting is really in demand and reflects the sincere desire of our peoples to expand partnership, strengthen friendship and good neighborliness, and jointly solve common problems.

Thanks to the political will and joint efforts of the leaders of the Central Asian countries, many complex and ambiguous issues found their solutions. Most importantly, these positive changes were supported by the population of our region, and were highly appreciated in the world.

At the same time, the current conditions of the rapidly changing world situation, the aggravation of security threats and the strengthening of factors that negatively affect stable development make it necessary to strengthen partnership on the basis of mutual trust and coordination of efforts.

In this regard, the current meeting opens a qualitatively new stage of the regional dialogue at the highest level.

"Thanks to God, we are neighbors. The history and destinies and future of our peoples are closely intertwined. And this is a great unifying force of the whole region – " Shavkat Mirziyoyev said.

The head of our state drew attention to the urgent issue of agreeing on a common vision of multilateral cooperation in Central Asia and put forward a number of other important initiatives.

This is, first of all, the deepening of trade, economic and investment ties. It is important to maximize the competitive advantages of our region, which has a capacious market, significant natural resources and human resources. It is necessary to jointly identify opportunities and promote cooperation projects in different sectors of the economy in order to form a value chain, expand intraregional trade, create jobs. Uzbekistan is ready today for active cooperation in agricultural machinery, automotive, electrical, textile industry, agricultural sector.
