Don't take it that seriously with the suicide. It was just meant to reflect the depressive atmosphere in the city.

Norilsk looks like quite depressing...No grass,no trees and neglected buildings...Awful place to live

How is it depressing? I am a Russian, and I lived there. I didn't find it at all depressing, because I was surrounded by people I love. Plus, you get used to these buildings, and they don't even look depressing to me. But I guess that's just me.

I guess it's mostly about the weather and environment in general eg. lack of any trees Althoug some of the buildings from this pictures look quite dilapitated.

The depressive part is of course that many houses are dilapidated and that there's a lot of social problems. Contray to what most people belive Norilsk is actually a growing city. However there's an lack of housing leading to high rents. Pollution is also a big problem.

Apart from that I really don't see any problems. People always adapt to where they are living, this environment is a bit unusual for most persons but quite normal to us northerners. But they should really lift the travel ban so that it won't feel just as isolated.

I found this video showing a little about Norilsk. It shows some commies in the end.

Thank You people for the pics. It was wonderful and also a bit sad to see Norilsk. My grandfather "spent" there 12 years (since 1948). But what he remembered is that nature was beautiful back then...despite all gulag and so on etc.
thanks again.
