It's interesting that Russians still build old school prefab commieblocks with some minor changes. Those are too massive for my taste though.

I have seen many pictures, why Russian population in Moscow, St. Petersburg and other large cities live in apartments, while most U.S. citizens own their own house with many rooms. is due to cold climate or construction costs cheaper apartments which accommodate many people in there?

Good for Russians. Building up is certainly more efficient than building out, while wasting billions on waging wars abroad just to keep our cosy but unsustainable way of life.

Awesome thread. A couple questions:

1) are there any pictures of the interiors? I'd really like to see what they are like inside.

2) Are the new apartments pretty much the same size and layout as the old Soviet ones, or are they bigger?

3) How many rooms do they generally have? How many bedrooms?

4) I saw some pictures of individual houses from Soviet times. Were there many individual houses built during Soviet times? Where did the Soviet elite live? Where there special communities for them?

i dont know detailed way about russia but at least other ussr countries (probably in russia too) had individual housing neighbourhoods kinda widespread but just less popular than nowadays, it was more peoples joice to get apartment. apartments was built by covermental workforce and they was most times free for citizens, u just have to be in waiting line and then u once get ur apartment. if u want to your own house, u was need to act like modern days, find free spot, collect money, buy construction materials and so on. also there wasnt very good sortiment of that kind products on market, so it was lil bit hard to find what u need (but not impossible).

so on thouse conditions its probably understandable why private housing was less popular and apartments was more popular.

also there was some mixed stuff like all kinds of rowhouses, what was build by covermental stuff but had many common with private housing in reality, that was one typical home for sucsesful people.

Studio: living room, bedroom, kitchenette combined in 1 room + toilet/bath
1-room: hall, kitchen, toilet/bath, 1 room
2-room: ditto, but 2 rooms
3-room: ditto, but 3 rooms
4 and more rooms can be found but aren't popular in commieblocks' apartments

I believe now they are 1,5 times bigger, in average. For example in 1960s-80s 2-room apartment could be 40 m (4 + 6 + 2 + 10 + 18), now it is about 55-60 m and more
