Great thread, and enough to warrant my first ever post on these forums.

I am trying to document London's council estates before they are all gone or "regenerated", i.e. clad in plastic with the tall bits knocked down. I'm touring the city with my camera at the moment taking photos which I hope to publish in a book, along with some kind of narrative history of public housing in London after WWII.

Particularly interested in the photos posted by Skabbymuff, and charting which of those have actually already disappeared. Most of the Nightingale Estate has gone, I think. Despite its problems, I always thought it was one of the more handsome high rise estates, especially viewed from the park.

Stonebridge Estate is also more or less gone now, I think, and Holly Street too. The Pepys Estate seemed to be under demolition even when those photos were taken. I tend to agree with the sentiments of its graffitti artist where the issue of regeneration is concerned.

The Aylsebury is still there, but not for long. I don't suspect the Heygate will much outlive it. I intend to mourn these things, if only because somebody should.

BTW: does anyone know where is the commieblock on Led Zeppelin IV cover?
That's in Dudley, about 10 miles west of Birmingham.

Great thread - I can't believe in the year and a bit I've been here that I've not managed to find this thread!

This places look very familiar:

Could it have been the set of David Guetta's parkhour video clip "Love don't let me go" here: http://youtube.com/watch?v=oNCmZdweGs8 ? If not, then the clip is worth it for the parkhour routines and brutalist/commieblock backdrop.

Great thread, thanks to everyone who's contributed. In all fairness though, 60's UK council estates are generally very different from continental ones, usually consisting of tall, stand-alone tower blocks. Does anyone know why the UK went down such a different route from the rest of Europe?

I think its because we had different architects and it was the liberating 60s, when we learned to question authority, do our own thing which included the way we designed buildings.
