So does New York still have street cars today? If not why did they take them out?

No, there's a plan to install them in Brooklyn. The streetcars were removed in the early 1950s ( across america, not just NYC ) due to increased car ownership, decreased ridership, aging rolling stock, the need for more traffic lanes on busy thoroughfares, and yes, heavy-handed lobbying tactics by the big bus and auto makers.

That's a shame. Is it possible to re-install them all over NY? Are the tracks still there or did they rip them out too?

Some of the original tracks are still embedded in the pavement in Brooklyn. The trolleys could be restored in the outer boroughs but not likely on Manhattan. DOT Commissioner Sadik-Khan is really pushing bicycling and wants to see more bike lanes all over the city. The MTA which would build and maintain a trolley system, is broke and so progress will be slow whatever they decide.

This has to be one of the best threads of SSC! Great to see NY begin 20th century and especially those street-scenes. Keep 'm coming.

It could well be. The Gen. Slocum didn't blow up until 1903. :P
