@desertpunk, fantastic thread, every single time when I look at the pictures of Lower Manhattan in the late '20s or '30s and '40s I get really despondent thinking about what happened to that area during the modernism and postmodernism era, upsetting win of dollar and heartbreaking defeat of architecture...

Thanks! You know what they say about change: "it isn't your best friend, it isn't your worst enemy, it just calls the tune we all dance to!"

What a beauty the Singer Building was! Still, change is what drives New York. If time stood still, it would look like a cute, but relatively boring, Dutch village. It's a city that always reinvents itself. Though I wish it didn't reinvent itself on top of the already beautiful buildings, but rather expanded into the boring projects.

By the way, thank ablarc for compiling this collection of photographs. He deserves all the credit given. I just brought it over from SSP as no one else had.
What a fantastic collection of photographs. I went to NYC several times in the 90s and it became one of my favourite places in the world. I loved everything about it except the cold! I loved the heat of summer!! I went to Penn station then as I had heard that it was famous for some reason. When I got there, I wondered why. Only now do I understand.

Have you seen the photos of the three greatest liners that were only berthed together once? Namely the Mary, the Elizabeth and the Normandie were tied up there for a short time in 1940.

^ For my taste, it changed way too much in some aspects, concerning the classic cityscape.

Seeing all these pictures made me dig up a wonderful little book which I bought a few years ago:

http://www.thecityreview.com/beaux.html

Maybe you can still get it somewhere, I highly recommend it!

it's really amazing that a city in the 1920s /30s /40s had a better and more impressive skyline than many cities nowadays. hell, i even think if NY would have stopped building after ~1940, it still would be in the top 10.

No, it would be #1 for all times as there's no city left that features a skyline of only classic towers.
