On a macro scale for Romania, from what I can see on the map, it appears that this bridge will connect Tulcea to the rest of Romania other than having to pass through Constanta or ferry connections

I like the bridge, clean lines, ageless

It's much more than that. The bridge will open an alternative main corridor to A1/A2 to Constanta port for N/NE Romania and further for Moldova/Ukraine freight transport. Further motorways/expressways will have to be built to connect the bridge.

I am a little surprised that there does not seem to be a rail connection included as part of the bridge plan. A link between Brăila and Tulcea would make sense.

Indeed. That is one of the most important downside of the project.

Thanks for the updates on the bridge. But, isn't it a bit premature to set the status of the bridge as "U/C"?

As far as I know, the contract was signed yesterday (and then the prime minister resigned..), but when is construction expected to actually start?
Wouldn't be the first time that it takes a significant amount of time for a big infrastructure project in Romania to actually be under construction after the contract signing..

The contract was signed yesterday, therefore we have a builder for it, and a good one for such a project. That is one thing.

Actual construction is not yet started but the design can start ASAP - also part of the contract as we have 12 months for technical design and it is the first step in the project (Yellow FIDIC). So, the project is currently under design phase to be exact, according to the contract. In parallel the expropriations will be made.

The construction of the bridge will make another project viable, Tulcea Airport, where investments were made in the runway and related infrastructure. It should be rebranded as Brăila-Galați-Tulcea airport after the bridge is complete.

An update here. Part of the design was performed, and is ahead of schedule (design is scheduled for 12 months according to contract). Also ahead of schedule, the builder plans to start works proper in last quarter of 2018 (works should span for 36 months).

Building technique will be similar to Osmangazi bridge, also designed by the same Japanese IHI Systems.

An update here. The technical design of the project has been completed a bit ahead of schedule, and we expect first mobilisation of works this fall.

In other news related to the bridge, the road authority has today cancelled, the second attempt already, the tender to "design and execute the relocation of the electrical and telephone networks" in the area of the Braila Danube bridge - because no offer was submitted, even though the contract value was raised from 3,5 to 12,4 million RON....

Again, a nice example how "well" projects are prepared - they sign the contract for the main works way well in advance before they manage to even auction that works for getting the construction site clear... Should be rather the other way around ...

Source??

This is really not the authorities fault . Noone showed up to the tender. They should internalise these kind of works to the general contractor or to the CNADNR.
