Chennai Metro rail to create artificial aquifer for train maintenance

Quote:
Chennai Metro Rail Limited (CMRL) will create an artificial aquifer to store excess water and use it during shortage to maintain its 42-train fleet. To create the recharge well, CMRL has begun looking for experts to conduct a hydrological study inside its office where the maintenance depot is located. A sewage treatment plant is also being expanded to cut down the metro water supply by 50%.

"Artificial aquifers are quite popular in the Gulf countries. It will be like a water storage unit, but we won't build pumps or tanks. We would be storing excess groundwater whenever available instead of letting it evaporate and use it during water shortage," said a CMRL official. "Our regular supply of metrowater will also be stored here."

Artificial recharge is a process where excess surface water is directed into the ground, either by using recharge wells or by altering natural conditions to increase infiltration.

The CMRL uses nearly 1.5 lakh litres of water every day for washing the trains and for its air-conditioning system in its administration building where the operation control centre also functions.

At present, an official said, much of the water supply is from metrowater through pipelines, tankers and from a nearby pond. A sewage treatment plant set-up inside the campus with a capacity of 75,000 litre/day is being used for gardening and cooling towers for the air-conditioning systems.

An expert will be employed to study the soil condition, groundwater table levels and potential as a storage system. "Since there is a pond nearby, we think the soil and the water levels will be good. Once the study is done, we will know how the recharge well can be," an official said.

In two months, the sewage treatment will be expanded to double its capacity to 1.5 lakh litres a day, as nearly 75,000-litres of sewage is released from CMRL housing quarters where around 100 families live. The treated water will also be used in the toilets.

Imagine working in one of those buildings and you also live near another metro station. Would be a dream commute.

Dream commute indeed. Are they doing anything about Mount Road now that metro is complete? The stretch between Shanti Theatre and Thousand Lights junction can do with some TLC. Some of those old office buildings are ripe for redevelopment.

Madipakkam to be fully connected via CMRL Phase II Corridor 5

Vanuvampet MRTS station (under construction) will soon house Metro trains.

Quote:
The long wait for Metro trains by residents of Madipakkam and surrounding areas has finally bore fruit as the entire neighbourhood is going to be connected via Metro trains following two major developments recently.

One was the official release of Chennai Metro Rail Ltd’s (CMRL) phase two map featuring all the localities from the neighbourhood and second was the announcement of feasibility report preparation by Southern Railway for the Mass Rapid Transit System (MRTS) and CMRL merger, again, featuring the neighbourhood localities.

When CMRL’s phase one project came into picture, the residents of Alandur, Nanganallur and St Thomas Mount got immensely benefitted. But, those residing at Medavakkam Main Road starting from Vanuvampet to Nanmangalam were left astray.

“Today, to catch a train, we either have to go all the way to Velacheri or St Thomas Mount. Needless to say about the last mile connectivity offered by buses. The important S11 small bus services were halted last year claiming poor patronage,” said a Moovarasampet resident P Dhamodharan.

But, CMRL has now released the official map of phase two project featuring almost all the localities here. Officials said the neighbourhood line comes under corridor five of phase two and will run from Vanuvampet to Kovilambakkam before making a turn towards Vellakal.

Also, it has been learnt that there will be six Metro stations in the neighbourhood – Vanuvampet, Puzhuthivakkam, Madipakkam Koot Road, Keelkattalai, Echangadu and Kovilambakkam, which will be elevated above Medavakkam Main Road. Alandur and Sholinganallur Metro stations will act as interchange stations, officials added.

Ullagaram resident Chandrababu, said, “This will be a welcome addition to the neighbourhood which is reeling under poor connectivity by road and rail. Add to that are the poor condition of the roads which lead to using personal vehicles, risky. The extension work of Medavakkam Main Road has made matters even worse as large pits have been dug without any further progress. If Metro services come here, it will be a great boon for us.”

This aside, with the Southern Railways getting the green signal for completion of MRTS second line between Velacheri and St Thomas Mount following all the disputes related to land acquisition solved, it has now started preparing the feasibility report for the merger of MRTS and CMRL which will lead to Metro trains running on the MRTS line. Officials said they are in the process of assessing hurdles and the report will be submitted before Ministry of Railways and Urban Development soon.

“If the MRTS line too becomes functional, we can easily take a train from Puzhuthivakkam to Velacheri from where we can access the entire coastal localities of Chennai from Madhavaram till Old Mahabalipuram Road (OMR) in addition to the access from Sholinganallur. Secondly, taking a train from Vanuvampet to St Thomas Mount, we can access the entire western localities of Chennai via Alandur. Hope the project gets completed soon,” said Sabari Salai resident V Jai Ganesh.

Just Guessing - Looks like Japanese technology will include signalling systems as well. If thats the case, common usage of phase 1 tracks will be ruled out. Mayb thats why, the JICA is not interested in that (corridor 5) sholinganallur to st thomas mount route funding.

This poster culture going more horrible is endemic to TN, if you add cutouts etc. Unless there is strong govt action against, it will only become worse.

Not necessary unless there is any kind of intellectual property hurdle in the signalling and communication product that they have bought for phase 1 ... Any kind of control or signalling kind of automation works mostly on open standard please protocol which must be ready for cross integration ...

The Govt is the one doing it all how on the earth they will stop - the govt says i built this and so i've a reason to spoil it too.. this is the same with every public infra across.

Unless people wakes up and protest these things will not stop. its sort becoming an addict to showcase their power and fame across the community these days i say. i see this across policiticos, death, birthwday, marriage, nuptials, baby shower, anniversary etc.. for all such everyone going up royally to do the banner and cut-outs to do.. for everything they do..
