Udaipur river model for Narmada revival

The Times of India
Quote:
UDAIPUR: Inspired by success of the conservation project of the legendary Ayad river in Udaipur, authorities of Madhya Pradesh has agreed to adopt it as a role model for an ambitious task of rejuvenating the Narmada river.

A portion of the holy Narmada extending up to 1,069 km between Amarkantak and Aadhirajkot has been taken up for conservation and making it safe from high level of pollution. The project will be based on the low cost 'Green-bridge technology' incurring no chemicals and hence involving no side effects. A massive plantation of 35 lakh saplings too has been planned under the initiative. N P Shukla, the chairperson of the Madhya Pradesh Pollution Control Board, in his official visit to Udaipur recently, visited the Ayad river where the green bridge technology has been implemented successfully. The officials were given a power point presentation by the office bearers of the Udaipur Chamber of Commerce and Industry of the Ayad model to understand its working.

A few years back, the Ayad river which was in a pathetic condition, was taken up for conservation after initiatives by the active civil society. The work was lauded as a model for integrated water resources management (IWRM) and integrated lake basin management (ILBM) in the country. Ayad river which had been a source of drinking water once, had changed into a dirty drain polluting the lake system in the course of time. It carried the entire domestic and industrial waste water of Udaipur deprived oxygen totally to aquatic life. Anil Mehta and Dr Tej Razdan of Jheel Sanrakshan Samiti (JSS) had initiated a revival project which won appreciation of the Planning Commission as a perfect model of public private partnership (PPP) for revival of the river.

Green-bridge technology uses some natural bacteria, water purifying shrubs, plants, loose stones and sand, coconut coir and sunlight to clean the water. This was unlike conventional systems which require power, chemicals and machinery. In this venture, the energy sources are the sun and the air and they synthesize their own chemicals and assimilate. The JSS sought the help of Srusthi Eco Research Institute, Pune, for applying eco-techniques to purify the river.

The installation of green bridges started in December 2009 at Sukha Naka, the end of the river and the point from where it enters Udaisagar lake. "It's an innovative approach to minimize the cost of pollution treatment when the cellulose/fibrous material like coconut coir or dried water hyacinth or aquatic grass are colletected together and wove to form a bridge/porous-wall like structure strengthened by stones and sand. Bridges acts as filters. All the floatable and suspended solids are trapped in this biological bridge and the turbidity of flowing water is reduced substantially," said Dr Razdan who gave a power point presentation of the Ayad model to the PCB authorities.

Results of the technology implementation came after one month and the process was over in the second week of March 2010. The foul smell started disappearing and the real changes that occurred later were evident and birds started converging on the treatment location. The quality of water in wells around the river's course also improved. The physical, chemical and biological examination of water before and after of the green bridges showed great improvement within one month of the installation of the technology.

In a decision by High court, the stay on the land for permanent campus of IIM Udaipur was pulled off. Management will now start working on construction of the campus for IIM-U at Balicha.

Started in 2011, IIM-U was functioning from the Polymer Sciences building in MLSU, Udaipur. With the stay pulled off, UIT also gave the green signal for the land in Balicha.

The land that was asked by management of IIM is 122 hectare in size and falls between Balicha (Girwa), Seth Ji ki Kundal and Surfala village.

According to a local daily, with this decision, the project of constructing the IIM-U campus which is estimated to cost around Rs. 577 crore, will kick start now. There will be measures applied to maintain the green factor of the area by building water body, green area, air pollution control, water pollution control and sewage treatment plan.

The campus will also have faculty and staff residences, student housing, management development center, academic facility, administration building, auditorium, club house, indoor sports facility and such.

UIT & Nagar Nigam to construct 4 tanks for Idol Immersion

By UdaipurTimes Team on January 12, 2015
Quote:
Idol immersion during festive season is one of the biggest reasons for lake pollution in Udaipur. To combat this problem, UIT and Nagar Nigam will collaboratively construct open tanks around lakes. Four prominent places have been marked, the construction process of which is also in motion.

Corporation Commissioner Himmat Singh Barhath informed that in the first phase the places for the tanks have been marked. This includes Dudh Talai, Gulab Bagh premise (around Samor Bagh road), Swaroop Sagar Bridge (Downstream of overflow section) and behind Ambapol sewerage pump house. After the immersion, the worship materials will be extracted.

Plaster of Paris, harmful chemicals and multi-colored idols along with the worship materials inserted in the water bodies emit lead, copper, mercury and arsenic which hampers the ecosystem and reduce the level of oxygen in the water body.

This water not only leads to death of sea creatures but vegetables, fruits and other perishable items grown in this water and consumed leads to cancer, skin disease, nervous system disorder and digestion problems etc.

No Traffic Respite to Udiapol even after UIT procures land

By UdaipurTimes Team on April 1, 2015
Quote:
In order to construct a 100’ road from Udiapol CHauraha to Sector 3, Hiran Magri, the UIT had earlier procured 11000 sqft land from the Roadways Authority. However, after many months of the takeover, the UIT has still not opened the road for the Roadways Buses to ply.

Illegal encroachments have already started in the land procured to construct the 100’ road.

Once the land was given to the UIT, the Roadways Authority had created an exit point for the buses coming from and going into the Bus Stand premises. However, due to no action by the UIT on the alternate road, it has yet to open to the roadways vehicles.

Once this road is open, the regular traffic jam situation occurring at Udiapol circle will become redundant, as the busses will directly approach Udiapol circle from the Police Line road.

Rajendra Upadhyay, Chief Manager, Roadways Depot, Udaipur spoke to a leading daily and said “When the UIT has taken land from the Roadways with an intention to build a road, the block should be opened to allow traffic flow to and from the Roadways Depot. Once this happens the recurring jam at the entry point of the Roadways depot will cease”

I think they are referring to this road
