You are right FKebede, there is no enough awareness in the community when it comes to art and art related field. Art is not a new thing for Ethiopians. Even, contemporary art interned in Ethiopia at the early time of Haile selassie era. Contemporary Ethiopian art is growing tremendously. However, people are behind understanding it. It is sad to see only embassies and foreign institutions care for Ethiopian art and artists. There is no any attention has given by government or local institutions. We don't even have ethiopian art history book to teach in the art college. We just are depending on Europian and western art history which has pros and cons into it. I am hoping that it will change one day.

Alexander "Skunder" Boghossian

b. 1937, Ethiopia
d. 2003

"In 1954 Skunder won second prize at the Jubilee Anniversary Celebration of Ethiopia's Emperor Haile Selassie I. The next year he was awarded a scholarship to study in Europe and spent two years in London at St. Martin's School, Central School and the Slade School of Fine Art. He extended his sojourn in Europe another nine years as a student and teacher at the Académie de la Grande Chaumière in Paris. In 1966 Skunder returned to Ethiopia and taught at the School of Fine Arts in Addis Ababa until 1969. He moved to the United States in 1970 and taught at Howard University from 1972 to 2001. He is the first contemporary African artist to have work purchased by the Museum of Modern Art in New York (MOMA). Also, Boghossian was the first contemporary African artist to have his work purchased by the Musee d’Art Moderne in Paris in 1963."

"Gebre Kristos Desta was one of Ethiopia’s leading painters, a poet and an inspiring and dedicated teacher. From his exemplary life and work in pre and post-revolutionary Ethiopia, his work and experiences in exile, until his untimely death in 1981 in Lawton, Oklahoma, USA, Gebre Kristos created many important milestones in the history of contemporary Ethiopia art."

"Gebre Kristos was cited in the 1965 Award as “largely responsible for introducing non-figurative art into this country” and as having “outstandingly contributed [to] the growth and evolution of Ethiopian art.” Gebre Kristos was born in Ethiopia's southeastern province of Harar in 1932. After studying science for two years at the University College of Addis Ababa, he left college and obtained a scholarship to study art in West Germany, where he stayed for five years. Since 1963, he has taught at the Government School of Fine Arts in Addis Ababa. His works have been exhibited in West Germany, Greece, Senegal, Canada, Russia, Yugoslavia, Brazil, and Ghana."
