City Lodge Maputo begins development

The City Lodge Hotel Group has begun the development of a 148-room City Lodge Hotel in Maputo (Mozambique) as part of its targeted African expansion programme.

Initial site works for the hotel began in late January and it is expected to open in the second quarter of 2018, taking the group’s number of hotels to 61, which will include three in Kenya, one in Tanzania, one in Botswana and one in Namibia, complementing 54 hotels in South Africa across the Courtyard Hotel, City Lodge Hotel, Town Lodge and Road Lodge brands.

City Lodge Hotel Maputo will feature seven storeys and a basement and will have four meeting rooms, a mini-gym and a swimming pool.

The group is currently developing three other new hotels in Africa: the 172-room City Lodge Hotel Two Rivers in Nairobi (Kenya), the 147-room City Lodge Hotel Dar es Salaam in Tanzania, and the 147-room Town Lodge Windhoek (Namibia).

Hotel will open at the end of the year. Now we know why the hotel has been delayed.

The City Lodge Hotels Group has called up the R40 million performance guarantee of the Mozambican contractor it appointed to build its new 148-room City Lodge Hotel in Maputo and cancelled the contract.
This follows “contractor-related delays and disputes” during construction of the hotel, which delayed the conclusion of the group’s initial R1 billion African expansion strategy.
The new Maputo hotel was initially scheduled to open in the second quarter of 2018.
The JSE-listed hotel group’s chief executive Andrew Widegger confirms that the group has called up the performance bond and cancelled the contract it awarded to Lutios to build the hotel.

City Lodge Hotel Maputo now open

07/02/2020

The City Lodge Hotel Group has opened its 62nd hotel today – the City Lodge Hotel Maputo in Mozambique, under the leadership of General Manager Gustavo Cardoso.

The hotel is ideally located on Rua Para o Palmar, near Avenida Julius Nyerere, and within easy reach of the Costa do Sol beach, city centre, a private hospital, university and various other business, entertainment, shopping and cultural attractions. It is the closest hotel to the Maputo International Airport, at some 6.5km or twelve-minute drive away.

This completes CLHG’s initial expansion plan of seven hotels outside of South Africa that began in 2015, with the City Lodge Hotel Maputo joining the group’s other properties in:

Botswana (104-room Town Lodge Gaborone)
Namibia (147-room Town Lodge Windhoek)
Kenya (127-room Fairview Hotel, Nairobi; 84-room Town Lodge Upper Hill, Nairobi; and 171-room City Lodge Hotel at Two Rivers Mall, Nairobi)
Tanzania (148-room City Lodge Hotel Dar es Salaam)

The hotel has 148 rooms, including one suite, and guest rooms feature en-suite bathrooms with maxi showers (selected rooms have baths), queen or twin beds, air-conditioning, wi-fi, television with selected DStv channels, tea and coffee making facilities, large electronic safe, fridge, USB ports on either side of the bed, and work desk with lighting and plugs for easy connectivity.
The hotel features three boardrooms that seat 12, 14 and 24 people (latter converts into two boardrooms of 12 seats each); #Café restaurant serving full breakfast, lunch and dinner plus alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages; swimming pool; bar; fitness room; free parking; 24-hour reception and check in service; and same day laundry. Three of the rooms are designed to meet the special needs of the physically disabled.
