I get these messages continually, making the forum almost not worth bothering with. Too time consuming waiting for pages to load, or not being able to click back or forwards, or to view messages. Also posts can take an eternity to load up, if they do at all; meaning having to re-write or post the same words or images over and over.....

My impression is that the problems have been steadily mounting since the time when we lost 'Guess The City' as a feature. Not sure what happened then?

What, with the constant database errors, and the annoying inappropriate ads I keep seeing, even though I am constantly clicking on the "ad inappropriate" button, I am on the verge of not logging on to this any more. Progress, eh???!!

True and, me too! However the upside being that ads give us some defense and leverage against arbitrary and biased mods. Remember, there is always an upside so, "always look on the bright side of life".

I've pretty much given up on this site! It's fundamentally broken! Such a shame as I've checked SSC daily for over 10 years!

The site is still great, but as I said in this thread:

https://www.skyscrapercity.com/showp...3&postcount=57

the software that this forum uses is no longer being updated. It became end of life at the end of 2017, see here:

https://www.vbulletin.com/forum/foru...-x-end-of-life

And the last developer (who runs another site I visit called Cable Forum) left the software company, Vbulletin, last year. There is nobody left at Vbulletin who can fix the problems with the software as its now 15 years old.

Of course, software doesn't age, but other tech moves on and the latest version of the web server software, called PHP, is not compatible with this forum's software anymore. Actually, it's probably more the adds-ons causing glitches, rather than the forum software itself, but either way, the software needs to be changed as of 18 months ago....

In the other thread "what are the constant problems with SSC," there was talk of the database size being the issue, but that shouldn't be a issue at all as long as there is enough capacity at the server and all the software is up to date. There are forums far larger than SSC that run without a hitch.

My own little forum uses software called WoltLab which I love, but the other two main forum software are IPS and Xenforo, which is what most ex-vbulletin forums use now.

I have the technical skills of a donkey, but if I were on the admin team, I'd remove the adds-on first for this site and see if that improves things and if not, change the software. This site will completely break at some point and possibly corrupt the database with all the data and pics in it. Hopefully, they have a backup...

It costs around £200-£300 for new software and at least the same again, if the software company does the install for the forum team. Add in various customisations and design, then I doubt there would be any change out of a few grand. Whether this site makes that much money through ads, is another matter entirely.

Problems have resurfaced again tonight after having been ok for the last week or so! The website has been almost unusable for the last hour!

Just occurred to me, I haven't seen one of these for maybe a week. Good job fixing the issue.

After a couple of good weeks with no database errors, they are back with a vengeance tonight.

Yeah, lots. Even be able to post this was a surprise. That little wheel just keeps on a turning.
