Apparently not as stalled as I had thought! Drove past today. WBHO has been appointed as contractor, and the building is now well out of the ground

Another building is U/C in Maboneng- the core of the building was maybe about 2 stories high. I didn't get a proper look as a taxi drove into me a few moments later.

A sad conclusion for this building but I cannot wait to see this eyesore go down- looks like they were gutting it today:

What's impressive is that I think the majority of these investments were in the inner city:

The City of Johannesburg’s Department of Economic Development is pleased to announce a total of R17 292 585 992.85 in total rand value of facilitated investment, at the end of the 2018/19 financial year.

Joburg plants seeds of hope in R144m informal trader market upgrade

On Monday, mayor Herman Mashaba announced a R144m expansion to the People's Market, which is linked - and runs alongside - the more formal Joburg Market, the largest fresh produce market in Africa by volume and value.

The People's Market houses 71 informal traders, giving them "the opportunity to generate their own income, often allowing them to educate their children or to buy a house", said Mashaba. It currently handles about R250m in annual purchasing.

Once the upgrade is complete, there will be an additional 28 stalls.

Mbucane started coming to the market when he was 16 to help his mother with her lemon stall. He is currently the youngest trader at the informal market.

Although he is a third-year accounting student at the University of Johannesburg, the young man has found purpose in the market. His two years of studies were paid off with the money made from selling lemons.

“On face value we are filthy, poor people, but we are living. We are the humble link between the consumer and the farmers. Our biggest customers are the foreign traders in the CBD and [on the] streets. They buy from us in bulk and then sell to people,” Mbucane said.

But recent xenophobic attacks in Johannesburg were bad for business, Mbucane said.

“They don’t come anywhere close to City Deep because they are afraid they might get attacked,” he said.

After studying is completed, Mbucane is looking into expanding the business and becoming a producer.

"For as long as we live, people will eat. After learning what I learnt here, I know one can never go wrong," he said.

He said the traders needed a cold room closer to their market.

“We spend a lot of money on transporting the goods to the cold room and then pay for storage daily. So we desperately need one close by that will be ours. We are doing so well. We just need infrastructural support. The sun affects the lifespan and we struggle during the rainy season,” he said.

Imagine if 25% of the Joburg CBD looked like this? The answer is: South Africa economy will be booming and lots and lots of tourists will be flocking to our country. But, the sad news is the whole city is in the hands of illegal immigrants and criminals...….

That's a bit of a generalisation. One of the main problems is the inability to enforce by-laws. Street infrastructure gets stolen / vandalised / broken as soon as it's installed - we need the extra 1500 JMPD cops on the streets patrolling day and night making sure vagrants and "counter-revolutionaries" are not destroying. Only then will we see lasting improvements.

This affordable housing development in Joburg has just won an international award

The City of Joburg (CoJ) has won a coveted international award for a new low cost housing development, which will eventually consist of 5,845 residential opportunities.

The CoJ in partnership with listed local integrated residential property developer Calgro M3, and the Standard Bank of South Africa, won the Sustainable City and Human Settlements Award from the United Nations (UN).

The award recognises the South Hills development, located in the south of Johannesburg, as a global green model community for its “outstanding demonstration in promoting sustainable cities and human settlements, as well as the implementation of sustainable development goals”.

The South Hills development will eventually consist of 5,845 residential opportunities, with approximately 1,410 already completed, and a further 1,600 being constructed and serviced. The development will comprise of a mix of fully-subsided homes, subsidised rental units, bonded units to the open market and free-stranding houses.

South Hills is situated along a transport node, offering residents easy access to transport, job opportunities, and local amenities, including shops and hospitals. Over 90% of the units fall within the Financial Sector Charter definition of affordable housing.

We believe that affordable housing shouldn’t be just about providing shelter. It also has to enhance quality of life, provide opportunities and support dignity,” said Wikus Lategan, the chief executive officer of Calgro M3.
