What are the advantages over the old Mi-8, Mi-17 designs?

PS: I love that it kept some characteristics of the old appearance.

it can carry more people, fly farther, fly faster and has really good climbing abilities that the prototypes already set many records.

but i think for a lot fo these, the mi-17 might still be good enough for most things. thats why russia has been so slow in develping it.

Mi-38T is a military modification of Mi-38
It is bigger and heavier then Mi-8/17/171. Can carry 30 pax over 24/26 or 6,000 kg (13,000 lb) of cargo VS 4,000 kg (8,820 lb)
Longer range and higher speed too

So this means that the old version is going to be continued as a model with less capacity but cheaper and more flexible?

You are right! Mi-38 serves to fill the gap between smaller Mi-8 family (Mi-17/171/172) and bigger Mi-26 model.

The "old" model was recently upgraded and renewed. Got new engines, new composite blades, new flight deck...

Fans are for fun!

Speaking seriously, helicopters of this kind must operate at very hard (sometimes extreme) conditions. Sometimes usage of air conditioners is unwanted or just impossible.
Small fans are lightweight and have low power consumption.

I think the fans are most useful and primarily intended for use in both cold temperatures and wet conditions. They keep the air flowing so no moisture from breathing and such will stick to the inside of the windows blocking the pilot's view.
They seem to be pretty standard in eastern cockpits.

This is an old problem. When they began to make the air conditioning system, the pilots were faced with a problem. When the helicopter needed a lot of power (for example, when lifting a lot of weight, working in the mountains at high altitude or saving fuel to cover large distances), the cabin air conditioning system has to be turned off (to increase power or save fuel). In one interview, the pilot of the helicopter aerobatic team said that before performing aerobatics, they turn off the air conditioning system because they need excess power. Therefore, technical designers decided not to remove old and reliable fans from the cab. This is especially true for helicopters that are designed to work in extreme conditions (in the mountains, work at long distances, lifting heavy loads, etc.).
On the one hand, this is a good tradition, and on the other hand, it is a technical necessity and a duplicate system. You need to know that in the cockpit of the helicopter is very hot because There are many heat-conducting devices and electronics. Therefore, if you turn off the air conditioning system, the fans are very helpful.
