Coming up, a Facebook-like education website

Quote:
Jaipur: Fed up of your child logging into Facebook at the cost of studies? The Rajasthan government has hit upon a remedy - a social networking site that will also help brush up a youngster's academic knowledge.

"The idea is to utilise the popularity of social networking sites among students. Most of them spend a lot of time on such websites every day," a senior official of the state's information technology department, which is developing the portal, told IANS.

The government portal will give tips to students on subjects like physics, chemistry and mathematics. Experts will be roped in to answer the academic queries students post on it.

"We thought why not make it a bit educational so that students can not only enjoy the fun that these sites offer but also get to learn something," the official said.

Students will be able to open up their individual accounts, add friends, upload photographs, play games and interact among themselves just like they do on Facebook.

"What makes it stand out is the fact that there will be subject-specific links on the home page. We will store e-books, objective questions and coaching material related to each subject," the officer added.

The development of the portal is in the final phase, he said.

The government should popularise the website by approaching educational institutes across the state, including schools, colleges and coaching centres, said Abhishek Sharma, a volunteer working with a local NGO.

"The students should be encouraged by the institutes to use this portal," Sharma told IANS.

"It will be fun to have such a social networking website. I usually get distracted by these sites, but fun and studies going together must be great. I am eagerly waiting for the site to be launched," said Manu Mishra, a Class 11 student.

Parents have also welcomed the initiative.

"My son spends half of his time on social networking websites which could be utilised for sports or studies. I will definitely encourage him to use the portal being launched by the government as it will at least have some study or course and subject material," said Ramkumar Joshi, parent of a Class 12 student.

Govt plans 14 more medical colleges

Quote:
JAIPUR: To boost medical education, the state government is trying to obtain permission from the Centre to convert 14 hospitals into medical colleges.

The state plans to turn 300-bed hospitals into private medical colleges. This will prevent migration of MBBS aspirants from Rajasthan to other places.

"Every year, a large numbers of MBBS aspirants migrate to other states and foreign countries like Russia to study as they are denied admissions here due to limited seats. Now, the state government plans to increase private colleges to boost medical education," the minister of state for medical and health, Rajkumar Sharma, told TOI on Saturday.

The craze for medical studies has increased over the past five years. In Kota coaching institutes there were around 7,500 aspirants preparing for pre-medical test (PMT) in 2005-06 but it increased to 16,000 in 2010-11. But, many students migrate to other states for medical studies.

At present, there are six medical colleges of the state government in Jaipur, Ajmer, Udaipur, Kota, Bikaner and Jodhpur. Also, there are two private medical colleges – NIMS University and Mahatma Gandhi Medical College, both in Jaipur.

As per the norms of the Medical Council of India, only a hospital of not less than 300 beds with necessary infrastructural facilities capable of being developed into teaching institution can be converted to a medical college.

There are 300-bed private hospitals in Bhilwara, Banswara and Bharatpur, which could be developed into private teaching institutes.

Chief minister Ashok Gehlot hopes that 14 private medical colleges could come up in the state soon. On World Population Day, Gehlot had said that some amendments are needed in guidelines of Medical Council of India to open a medical college. This is under consideration.

Sharma said one MCI guideline state that a medical college shall be set up only on a plot of land earmarked for the purpose. There should be a suitable single plot of land measuring not less than 25 acres and is owned and possessed by the person or is possessed by the applicant by way of 99 years lease for the construction of the college.

He said that most of the 300-bed hospitals do not have land, which could be developed into campus of the teaching institute or medical college. "This is the only hurdle. Efforts are being made to clear the hurdle and to seek permission from the MCI and Centre for the medical colleges. Such hospitals have land somewhere else where medical college can be developed," Sharma said.

Rajasthan new hotspot for foreign universities

Quote:
Jaipur: Earlier, it was private universities booming in Rajasthan. However, seeing the huge potential in higher education sector foreign universities are now planning to open campuses in Rajasthan.

Since the time, when Government of India gave nod to the Foreign Educational Institution (Regulation of Entry and Operations) Bill 2010, a number of foreign universities have started making efforts to enter into education sector in India.

In fact, Rajasthan seems to have become favourite destination for foreign players as the state has huge potential to provide infrastructure, ample space and its proximity to the national capital. Recently, officials with the California based Claremont Graduate University have surveyed Rajasthan to identify possibilities of establishing campuses in future.

"Earlier, we were considering Delhi for as viable option. However, we felt that a lot of educational institutions already exist over there with lesser scope of infrastructure. We also realised that a large number of students from Rajasthan were going abroad to pursue higher studies. Therefore, we thought establishing our campus here will help students to get world class education by spending less and without leaving their country," said Mumtaz Kutty, dean (India), Claremont Graduate University (California).

"We also noticed that the quality of education till undergraduate level in Rajasthan is good, however, there is no real academic leadership for postgraduate programmes as compared to southern states," she added.

As of now, the Claremont Graduate University will start Masters of Science in Information Systems and Technology (MS-IST) from July 1, 2011. The duration of the course will be of 11 months. This year the university will run a temporary campus at Chennai, where the PhD holders from the United States will visit every month to deliver lectures. In addition to this, the university will also start seven other programs. The university officials look forward to set up a campus in partnership with other private investors in Rajasthan.

Quote:

Quote:

Govt colleges in Rajasthan to start placement cells

Quote:
Jaipur: Very soon students of government colleges will have jobs even before they step out of their institutes. In a move that will provide them a chance to be recruited in companies, placement cells are being formed in government colleges.

These placement cells comprising various faculties and students will contact the corporate houses and send the profiles of students of final year to them for short listing. After being shortlisted, the companies will visit the campus of government colleges for recruitment.

Giving this information, director of college education Subir Kumar informed that till now this aspect was missing in government colleges and students used to take admission in private colleges thinking about the campus placement. But this will change now and very soon the companies will come to the colleges, he added.

The placement cells will also work upon the improvement of communication skills of students and guide them to hone their skills required by the corporate houses before hiring them.

"Our students lack in displaying their skills and this keeps them behind. The companies recruit students of private colleges, but now we will guide them in developing all the skills the companies want in students," said Subir Kumar.

For this purpose, department of college education has identified six colleges of repute in the state which include government college Ajmer, Alwar, Behror, Kaladera, Bikaner and Government college Udaipur.

"These colleges have been identified initially for setting up of placement cells based on their educational performance, we will extend the formation of placement cells to all other colleges based on after getting the results," he said.
