Subway line project to Istanbul’s third airport launched

Quote:
A project to construct a subway line connecting Istanbul’s third airport to the city center has been launched, said Transportation Minister Feridun Bilgin.

A tender for the project’s testing and preparation stage has started, with the aim of completion in one year’s time, Bilgin said. The tender was made July 27 and after a year of project testing and other processes, the construction’s main tender will be made in mid-2016, said the minister.

“The new subway line will enable people to reach the third airport from several points in the city center faster,” Bilgin noted, as quoted by Anadolu Agency.

The subway line, starting from Gayrettepe, will be 33 kilometer-long and will take 26 minutes from one end to the other. Gayrettepe, where the existing subway, Metrobus and bus lines currently meet, will be the main transfer point for both the Asian and European sides, Bilgin said.

The trip from Istanbul’s touristic İstiklal Street to the new airport will take 42 minutes and 70 minutes from the Kadıköy district on the Asian side, he added.

The new airport is being constructed at the road junctions of Arnavutköy, Göktürk and Çatalca, north of Istanbul’s European side, between the Black Sea regions of Yeniköy and Akpınar. There is currently no sea or subway transportation to the site from the city center.

Phase A of the construction’s first stage has plans to be finished in the first quarter of 2018 to serve 90 million passengers, according to company representatives in an exclusive interview with Hürriyet Daily News.

At this time, two landing fields and one terminal will be opened. Sixteen months after the phase’s completion, the company will need to open the third landing field.

After its completion, the new airport will serve a total of 150 million passengers and over 150 airline companies, while employing 100,000 people.

Construction of Istanbul's third airport 6 months ahead of plan

August 20, 2015
Construction of Istanbuls third airport 6 months ahead of plan
The new airport's construction is proceeding smoothly with 7,500 people working on the project, a number that might swell to 30,000. Once completed, the airport will relieve the pressure on Atatürk and Sabiha Gökçen airports, which are overcapacity

The construction of Istanbul's third airport is progressing faster than planned with the project expected to be completed six months earlier than scheduled, according to the CEO of the project Yusuf Akçayoğlu. While the third airport was planned to be completed in the third quarter of 2018, Akçayoğlu said they are working to finish the project in the first quarter of 2018.

The formal process started with the construction site delivery on May 1. Two runways, a terminal with a capacity of 90 million passengers and other additional buildings will be constructed in 42 months in the first phase. The construction of the third runway will be completed in the 58 months that follow site delivery in the second phase. Istanbul's Atatürk and Sabiha Gökçen airports face capacity problems because of the rapid growth in the civil aviation transportation sector in recent years. Therefore, the airport project will be completed in the first quarter of 2018, although its formal construction period ends in October 2018. After the revised master plan of the airport project was approved on June 22, 2015, infrastructure and superstructure projects that will accelerate construction activities have also been confirmed. The construction is running smoothly and the Ministry of Transport, Maritime Affairs and Communication are holding coordination meetings with the General Directorate of State Airports Authority (DHMİ) on a regular basis.

There are a number of earthworks taking place on the project site. The poor-quality earth, which consisted of mine dumps, was completely removed from the area where upper structures will be built. Additionally, elevated areas are also being excavated. Rehabilitation and fill work is continuing in the marsh area, parts of which were drained in the first phase.

Design firms started work after the finalization of all tenders regarding the design of the airport. Tenders regarding subcontractor companies and equipment have also been completed to a major extent. The construction work is continuing in parallel with the confirmation by design firms. All equipment related to the construction work, including baggage, bridges, main energy center, facade, roofs, steel, elevators, escalators and fuel will be ordered by the end of 2015.

When the project is completed, the new airport will set an example by having the highest international flight safety standards. The most advanced technology and experience in the aviation sector are being closely pursued to this end.

A total of 7,500 people - 653 white collar and 6,846 blue collar - are employed on the project. When the construction work reaches the most intense level, it will offer jobs to a total of 30,000 people. Currently, there are 1,460 trucks deployed on the site.

A total of 10 million trees will be planted in place of those trees that were cut down as a part of the project.

The airport will have 165 passenger-boarding bridges, four terminals connected with a railway system, three maintenance buildings, eight air traffic control towers, six runways, 16 taxiways, an airport hangar of 6.5 million square meters with a capacity of 500 airplanes, a parking lot with a capacity of about 70,000 vehicles and touted as the largest airport parking lot in Europe, a clinic, fire department, hotels, a convention center and recycling and waste disposal plants. The airport will be connected to the Istanbul metro and multi-lane highways will be built to facilitate access. The area where the airport is being built was chosen with the consideration of ecological balance, wind data and the natural and artificial obstacles of the region.

Istanbul's third airport to open on Feb 26, 2018

December 11, 2015

Istanbuls third airport to open on Feb 26, 2018
Transport Minister Yıldırım gave a precise date for the opening of Istanbul's third airport. Accordingly, the world's biggest airport will be officially inaugurated on Feb. 26, 2018

Minister of Transport, Maritime and Communication Binali Yıldırım has set the date for the opening of Istanbul's third airport as Feb. 26, 2018. Yıldırım attended the inauguration ceremony of an event in Istanbul called the Satellite, Space and Technology Days powered by TÜRKSAT, where he announced the date for the opening of the world's biggest airport.

The first broadcast from the TÜRKSAT 4B Satellite was actualized during the inauguration, which was streamed via the 4K teleconference, featuring the latest images from the ongoing construction of Istanbul's third Bosporus Bridge, the third airport and the İzmit Bay Bridge. Also, the TAI Satellite Test Center in Ankara participated in the live broadcast.

People attending the ceremony were also witness to some amusing scenes, as Yıldırım maintained his "outspoken man" reputation. During the live broadcast of the third airport, Yıldırım asked the project's chairman Nihat Özdemir if he wants to say something as the "property owner" referring to the agreement giving operational rights to IGA for 25 years. The IGA, Havalimanı İşletmesi A.Ş. Consortium, includes five big construction companies, which won a tender held in May 2013 to build Istanbul's new airport. "Sorry, I mean long-term renter," added Yıldırım. The minister further asked Özdemir when the airport will start to operate. Özdemir said that they expect the first flight to arrive in the first quarter of 2018. The minister, who has 13 years of experience, set the date for the opening as Feb. 26, 2018. The original plan for the project was set for the second half of 2018, which was later changed by IGA, noting that the project will be completed six months earlier than planned.

On Wednesday, Özdemir announced tha when the first phase of Istanbul's third airport comes into operation, operations at Istanbul Atatürk International Airport will cease.

The total budget of the project's first phase is about 6 billion euros, and 25 percent of this budget will be financed by the consortium's equity capital. The four phases of the project will be financed by bank credits totaling 80 percent and equity capital totaling 20 percent. Moreover, it is not expected to be a burden on the Treasury.

The airport is planned to serve an average of 200 million people annually when all four phases become operational. Currently, a total of 8,000 people are employed on the project; however, when the construction work reaches the most intensive level, it will offer jobs to a total of 100,000 people. Also, there are 2,500 trucks and heavy equipment machines deployed at the site.

The airport will have 165 passenger jetways, four terminals connected with a railway system, three maintenance buildings, eight air traffic control towers, six runways, 16 taxiways, a 6.5 million-square-meter airport hangar with a capacity of 500 airplanes, an approximately 70,000 vehicle capacity parking area - touted as the largest airport parking lot in Europe - a clinic, fire department, hotels, a convention center and recycling and waste disposal plants. The airport will also host 150 airlines. The airport will be connected to the Istanbul metro, and multi-lane highways will be built to facilitate access. The area where the airport is being built was chosen after the ecological balance, wind data and the natural and artificial obstacles of the region were taken into consideration.

Istanbul’s 3rd airport’s air control tower to have tulip-inspired design

December 24, 2015

Pininfarina and Aekom's innovative tulip-inspired design was announced Thursday as the winner of the international design competition for the airport traffic control tower of Istanbul's third airport.

The AECOM and Pininfarina design is an elliptical tower that harnesses aerodynamics. The design combines speed, modernity and romanticism, while its tulip-inspired shape is a beautiful reference to the centuries-old Turkish history.

Initiated by the IGA (Istanbul Grand Airport), the contest saw many world-renowned designers from both aviation and automotive sectors. The tulip-inspired design was chosen from a total of six entries from international architectural teams such as Zaha Hadid, Moshe Safdie, Fuksas, Grimshaw-Nordic and RMJM.

Commenting on the results of the contest, IGA CEO Yusuf Akçayoğlu said that the airport traffic control tower had an especially symbolic meaning for the new Istanbul Airport-which is set to be the world's largest new airport in terms of annual passenger capacity.

Stating that they were looking for just the right design that would fit for a 21st century airport while at the same time remaining sensitive to Istanbul's unique heritage, the CEO said that it was a tough call between the six top designs.

"The new air traffic control tower will be an iconic structure, visible to all passengers travelling through the airport," said Akçayoğlu reminding that the new tower will rise on a 5.000 sq. meter construction area with a height of 95 m.

"We aim to complete the air traffic control tower in October 2017, "he said, adding that the construction will begin in May 2016.

The new airport is currently being built on the European side of Istanbul and the construction is expected to be completed by 2018. It will also have an initial capacity of 90 million passengers per year, but with extensions it will be able to host 200 million.

The IGA consortium, which won a tender held in May 2013 to build Istanbul's new airport, comprises of five leading Turkish construction companies Cengiz, Mapa, Limak, Kolin and Kalyon.

In October, IGA made an agreement with Turkey's state-owned Halkbank, Ziraat Bankası and VakıfBank as well as foreign-financed banks DenizBank, Garanti Bankası and Finansbank for a €4.5 billion loan for the first phase of the aviation project.

E così Istanbul è quasi a quota 90 milioni.

Round-the-clock work on Istanbul’s new airport
More than 13,000 workers from 16 countries are working on Istanbul’s 3rd airport, whose first stage is planned to open in 2018

02.04.2016

The construction of Istanbul’s new airport, expected to be the world’s largest, is taking place 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, with more than 13,000 workers from 16 countries.

Anadolu Agency photographed Istanbul’s third airport – after Ataturk and Sabiha Gokcen – now under construction in the northwestern part of the city in the European part of Istanbul.

The first stage of the project is expected to be open by 2018.

The project is seen as one of the world's largest in terms of the site and the number of workers.

The first two-and-a-half years of the project – set to include shopping malls, hotels, and social and religious facilities – carry a price tag of some 6 billion euros.

The airport will have connections to the metro, the high-speed train, and bus service.

The project’s infrastructure and superstructure work has been carried out in different zones simultaneously due to deadlines.

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said last October that the new airport would set an example to the world in terms of being environmentally friendly. “Generating its own energy, this airport is designed to be eco-friendly and handicapped accessible,” he said.

The new airport’s waiting areas will be decorated with live plants.

Erdogan said that once the new airport is completed, it would be one of the largest in the world in terms of passenger capacity.
