KLM still uses 8 MD-11's on intercontinental routes. From 2014 the MD-11's will replace by new Airbus and Boeings.

From the 10 MD-11s that the KLM used to have 4 have already been retired from July last year. This means that they only operate 6 right now and from those 3 more will be retired this summer. In the summer 2013 schedule there are currently only MD-11 flights to Los Angeles (3 flights per week in June and September) and Toronto where it will fly mixed with the A332. This last route is the latest service reduction that was announced last week.

I won't be surprised if the winter 2013 schedule won't have any scheduled MD-11 flights anymore. The last 3 will probably be used as reserve before they will leave the fleet in 2014.

So anyone that still wants to fly the MD-11 on a scheduled passenger flight should do so this year, otherwise it might be too late.

it seems that flights to Toronto will be mixed with B744, and sooner there were A332 and B744 mixed services

The newest trijet is Falcon 7X. It is true that it is brand new, selling like hot cakes, and what Dassault is doing is upgrading their smaller planes - Falcon 2000 versions, and Falcon SMS. But what would the next big Falcon be?

KLM has loaded the winter 2013 schedule (starting 17 October 2013), there are still 2 routes that are operated by the MD-11.
http://airlineroute.net/2013/04/04/kl-w13update3/

Amsterdam – Montreal: Daily
Amsterdam – San Francisco: 5 weekly

These schedules are always subject to change, so keep an eye on any updates if you want to fly on a MD-11 in the last year of operation.

Yeah, I am very surprised that KLM still operates the MD-11 on its AMS-SFO operation (I now live in the Bay Area), so it is a huge rarity that it is the only airline left operating the tri-engine jet on passenger operations. The airline, though, that made me recall of the aircraft is the former Swissair that operated MD-11s on its long-hauls between Zurich and points in Asia...

As with any aircraft type retiring, it may be hard to bid farewell to them, especially on passenger operations. But, it's great to see KLM getting better Airbus and Boeing aircraft for its long-haul needs. Hopefully, KLM will operate the final MD-11 flight between AMS and SFO, and I am hopeful that it will be replaced with a daily B77W or B772 service.

From the MD-11's glory days:

Here are some of the birth of MD-11s. The old MD-11 production line in all its glory.

Today at Long Beach, there are no large production facilities or any amazing aircraft being built. All that's left is a bit of old tarmac with grass growing over it.

The main assembly hall in Long Beach, where Boeing kept assembling the 717s until the end of the production is still standing. And earlier this month it was in the news that Mercedes will use the building to open a new factory in 2014.

http://www.presstelegram.com/general...-in-long-beach

The "Fly DC Jets" sign won't be removed from the building.

And Boeing Defence is still assembling the Boeing C-17 Globemaster III at the original McDonnell Douglas factory in Long Beach. This is a different building, at the other side of the airport then the buildings where the MD-11 was assembled.

The main building where they assembled the MD-11s has been demolished in the early 2000's though. All that is left there is a field of grass.

Not true.

The MD-11 assembly line was in building 84, which is still standing right next to building 80 with the Fly DC Jets sign.

What has been demolished are many of the buildings where the parts where fabricated. You can see it with the time line on Google Earth historical imaginary how the site developed from 1994 until now. All the building that are gone now were demolished in 2005.
