Super Casino Proposals

I thought i'd creat a thread where the cities applying for the casino could show any plans they have available for the casino, and subsequent devlelopment associated with it. Hopefully we could have a debate as to which is better and why?

Here is Cardiffs' proposal:

Situated on a brownfield puninsular site, the casino will be the main focus of a huge development in the Bay area of Cardiff know as the International SPorts Village. The regional casino is the catalyst in assuring the International Sports Village is completed in time to support the Olympics of 2012 and the preparation years of 2010 and 2011. Operation for the Regional Casino will be the major UK/Australian partnership of Aspers.

Here is the casino and associated hotel:

If the casino is given the go ahead it will ensure that the following proposals will get built and are available in time for the 2012 olympics.
The main addition to cardiffs skyline will be three residential towers

Also as the title suggests there will be a host of sporting venues

Snow dome

ice hocky rink

as well as a wight water rafting center. Construction on a new swimming pool is already underway.
Here is a larger view of the site

If i have omited something let me know

Those residential towers look quite interesting.

Would these proposals get built if Cardiff didn't get the super casino & was given a regional one instead??

Cardiff won't get the super casino, it's in the bag for Blackpool. Proposals for the Sports Village have been around for years, they certainly pre-date the liberalisation of gambling laws - http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/wales/687342.stm

Whilst I do feel that Blackpool has it in the bag and has probably the most to gain from a super casino, i have to say that many of the rival proposals look to be more impressive. I hope one of them doesn't tempt people away from blackpool which is right royally screwed if it doesn't win! Besides which it was Blackpool that lobbied for the law changes in the first place.

I wish nowhere was getting one. Gambling is a disaster for some, and licensed robbery for the rest.

I think the Dome has as great a chance as Blackpool. Remember the Government will receive money from the future success of the Dome project because of the deal it made with the developers. Award the casino and dome will be even more of a nice little earner.

If the Government awards it to the Dome it will be open to accusations of London-centricity. They'll probably want to be seen to be doing something for 'the North'.

I think Blackpool's going to get it.

What does a casino have to do with a sports village anyway? Are we going to invent the 100m dash to the roulette wheel?

Greenwich's plan was for it to be situated on the Peninsula (SE10)

It says on the site that if the regional/super casino came, then the hotel would be built along with it.

Here is one of Newcastle's proposals on Pottery Lane(what I think will be the smaller of the two proposals)

The other proposal is by MGM Mirage and NUFC, though I have not seen a pic of that, this one here is obviously by The Isle of Capris

The super casino will provide the finance for the sports village to be completed by 2012 so it can be used as a training base for athletes competing in London. Without it, the council say it'll still get built, but it'll take longer.

So the developers are being asked to contribute money for the development of the rest of the site? Like a Section 106?

I'm not sure if it's that or if it's just that council will be able to sell the land for a higher price if there's permission for a super casino...

thinking soley of a location for a successful business venture, the Dome wipes the floor with the rest of them. However the whole reason behind scaling the number of super casinos from 7(8?) to 1 is so they can judge the social effects in the local vicinity. If the effects are negative, you only wreck one town instead of 8.

Whilst the Tower hamlets across the river could do with much regeneration, the close proximity of Canary Wharf and the Olympic village in Stratford would skew any of the Dome's regeneration findings beyond all recognition. This utterly defeats the point of only allowing 1 casino. We'd be left in no better posistion to judge the effects of future casinos as we are now.

Will one casino in Blackpool pull in thousands of punters in the dead of winter?I'm not so sure. Stag and hen nights are year round but in winter this may just make up any shortcommings when comapring to proposals in more populous cities. Summer/Autmn crowds however, will take Blackpool's numbers above all but London.

I'd go for Blackpool because summer trade will be greater than in other cities. If it proves successful Blackpool needs to go all out and look to get a cluster of casinos, whose draw alone will be enough to pull winter crowds from all over the north west. One casino won't do this and cities who won't aim for clusters should not get it (the dome being the only exception). Blackpool is the only one that can afford or has the will to risk everything on being the next Atlantic City. For nobody else will it be viewed as such a jewel in the crown.

Go Blackpool

My gut feeling about the Dome is that for a variety of reasons it could be politically almost out of the question for it to go there:

(1) It smacks of desperation to fill the Dome in order to justify its existence. Again.
(2) The 'John Prescott' factor
(3) The slight over-eagerness on the part of the developers
(4) Another national prize going to London

I would be amazed if the government risked the backlash, although personally I'm sure the Dome would be a good home for it.

As for Cardiff, I do think it's highly unlikely but it's as convincing a case as most of the others. Cardiff Bay is an increasingly popular tourist draw and public awareness of its existence is reasonably healthy, so as for numbers I'm sure they'd do OK. It's in a corner of the city where unemployment is still pretty high, so would be useful in that respect - although obviously the counter-argument here is that being in such an area it might be a dangerous source of temptation for the economically deprived.
It will provide funding to kick off the Sport's Village properly, which does have the potential to provide Olympic training facilities, especially around the white-water centre which is proposed.

With regard to the posts above, I think the funding will be generated largely from land sale. With the Casino being such a major development, the council can sell of the land in a big lump rather than the piecemeal fashion that would be necessary without it.

And the residential towers will go up regardless. Due to start early next year, and the website is up already. Although there's nothing actually on it yet...

It seems from the arguements made so far that Blackpool is the logical choice. Apart from more buisness for me I can't see any reason why it shouldn't go to Blackpool.

Was it ****, it was Newcastle, a few years ago, the then chairman of Newcastle United started the idea, and Newcastle City Council did all of the investigation work and planning work so that gambling wouldn't engulf the city.
