stupid question but what will it take to get more direct flights to CT?
Larger airport? more runways?

OR Tambo would have to be destroyed first. That would give us more direct flights.

An end to seasonality and/or more business travel. Airlines struggle during off peak months on the CPT route. Attracting major conferences has the potential to fill this gap as filling business class seats is the key factor in attracting airlines.

Business class and full-fare paying passengers. Get more of those, you get more direct flights. Same lesson applies to Durban.

The long term plans for the CPT airport call for a second and third runway. The one-mile runway may need to be removed to make way for these new runways. I heard this from airport-technology.com.

Will there be limited airpraft parking despite the expansion of the airport for the 2010 World Cup?

Reconfiguration? This is quite an extensive upgrade. Reconfiguration does not do justice to the R1.5 billion being spent.

see acsa website:

Roadway: Current vs. New
The current Ring Road more commonly known as the drop-off and go road, has moved to a new temporary by-pass road (as indicated in green in the diagram). Special parking bays have been allocated for drivers to stop along the side of the by-pass road to allow passengers to disembark.

As you approach the airport, please look out for signage indicating the new by-pass road. Entrance to the general car park will change from its current position to a slip lane off the new by-pass road. Entry into the multi-storey parkade will also be off the by-pass road, just before the domestic drop-off and go section. The car park exits remain unchanged

Construction Site Hoarding

A broad swathe of the front of the terminals is hoarded off as part of the construction site in order for the new terminal and the elevated road to be built. Special courtesy cart routes and pedestrian walkways have therefore been mapped out to facilitate passengers safely and swiftly to and from the terminals. Two separate courtesy cart routes will operate on either side of the by-pass road. There will be three pedestrian routes to the Domestic Terminal and one clearly demarcated route to the International Terminal (as indicated in the diagram).

Domestic Car Rental return route

Due to the closure of the current Ring Road, the route for Domestic Car rental returns has been diverted (as indicated in the diagram). Coming off the N2 on the airport approach road, clients returning domestic car rental vehicles must stay in the right lane and turn right at the robots into Tower Road (look out for signage). The route will be clearly mapped out with signage from this point.
