WCIT 2008, 'Saladin' to ride in next year
20-05-2008
By: Tan Kit Hoong
Source: The Star Online

KUALA LUMPUR: The Multimedia Development Corporation’s (MDeC) long-awaited action-adventure cartoon, Saladin, has a firm release date and some changes, it was announced during WCIT 2008.

Kamal Nahrin Sudin, production manager at MDeC’s creative multimedia department, said 13 episodes would be released by the end of next year. This will be followed by another 13 episodes (the second season) by end 2010.

The series, which was experiencing production delays in the beginning, had been picked up by the Al-Jazeera Children’s Channel awhile ago, with plans to turn it into an animated TV series.

Kamal said the Al-Jazeera Children’s Channel has asked for some changes to be made, most notably some tweaks to the storyline as well as character designs. For example, he said, the Channel wanted the lead character to look more Arabic.

The agreement between MDeC and the Channel was signed in December, last year, and the reworking of series started early this year. Saladin is about the adventures of a 12th century adventurer and statesman.

Sneak Peek to Malaysia's first 3D animation Film "Geng"

We are pleased to announce that we have released a sneak peek to our animated film production "Geng". You can hop on over to our website at http://www.lescopaque.com and download the sneak peek.
"GENG" Synopsis

Bored with nothing to do for their school holidays, Badrol invites his best friend Lim to go on a camping trip at his old Kampong where he grew up, with intentions to experience some long-forgotten true Malaysian life in his Grandfather’s durian orchard. However their simple holiday trip is cut short by the discovery of a clue that leads them closer to the legend of the mystery house deep in the forest. Together with their newly found friends, Rajoo the animal-whispering boy, Ros the village beauty, and her two mischievous twin brothers, they work together to unravel the secrets surrounding the small Kampong.

----------------

The film's working title is "Geng" which basically means a gang of friends in Malay. The movie will showcase Malaysian culture and values and beautiful landscapes. "GENG" is a story about teenagers, friendship, unity and an adventure filled with comedy and action. Softwares used in production are Autodesk Maya 8.0, Adobe Photoshop, Adobe After Effects, Adobe Premiere and others.

The purpose of this sneak peek is to gain industry and audience feedback on our technical quality. Since we are new to this industry we welcome comments from everyone that can help us learn and improve our skills. We apologize that as of now we haven't included subtitles to our sneak peek yet. Stay tuned for that.

SpaceToon to invest in Malaysian animation industry
By Ooi Tee Ching Published: 2008/10/24
BusinessTimes

DUBAI-BASED children television station SpaceToon International is collaborating with the Perak state government to develop an animation school, production house and film-making studio cluster in Perak.

As a foreign direct investor, SpaceToon has allocated RM80 million for the first phase of development.

"Malaysia is our choice naturally, given the country's strong pool of human capital and talent in creative and digital technologies," said SpaceToon Media Group International president and chief executive Fayez Al-Sabbagh, citing comic works by local cartoonist Lat.

The Perak state government is a 30 per cent shareholder in this joint venture.

Falcon's Treehouse, a company based in Florida, is in-charge of the concept masterplan of the development. The creative content hub will be located on a 20.3ha site in Meru Raya, and the infrastructure is expected to be ready by the end of 2010.

Yesterday, SpaceToon appointed TH Properties Sdn Bhd, a wholly-owned unit of Lembaga Tabung Haji, to manage the project development. TH Properties chief executive Zaharuddin Saidon represented his company at the signing ceremony held in Kuala Lumpur.

"We hope to recruit a few hundred students when we open the school in 2011," Al-Sabbagh said.

"We're not just here to build the infrastructure. We want to be directly involved in moulding new talents to boost the local animation industry," he added.

SpaceToon's business footprint covers the Middle East, North Africa, Indonesia, South Korea and India. It has the rights to the largest library of Arabic-dubbed animated cartoons.

Asked on SpaceToon's longer- term investment in Malaysia, Al-Sabbagh said he hopes to collaborate with local media giant, Media Prima, to establish a dedicated children programme channel.

Terengganu spends RM4m on animated movies
Tuesday November 25, 2008

KUALA TERENGGANU: The Terengganu government is spending over RM4mil to produce four series of animated movies which will be aired by Media Prima television stations next year, said Mentri Besar Datuk Ahmad Said.

He said that three of the series, with 13 episodes each, had been completed, namely Tiga Gadis Pingitan, Aca and Atok dan Kabilah.

The last of the series, which was in the process of completion, would premiere on Radio Televisyen Malaysia (RTM), he said.

“We will launch the series in March or April next year,” he told reporters after chairing the weekly executive council meeting at Wisma Darul Iman here recently.

Ahmad said that Media Prima and RTM would pay the state RM45,000 for each episode.

He said the state had set up a company named Eastern Pacific ICT Sdn Bhd with 45 local animators and workers to produce the series.

He added the state planned to market the series abroad as well. — Bernama

Kampung Boy graces our stamps
Thetar

Stamping his identity: Lat with the special stamps
that feature his Kampung Boy cartoons.

KUALA LUMPUR: Lat’s Kampung Boy cartoons will soon be immortalised on Malaysian stamps.

From Dec 1, the 30sen and 50sen stamps will feature Kampung Boy and his depiction of Malaysian life.

Lat, whose real name is Datuk Mohamed Nor Khalid, said having his comics on the stamps was a great honour and a once-in-a-lifetime experience.

He said he shared a close relationship with the postal service when he was younger.

“When I was in Form Four, I used to submit my comics to Berita Minggu in huge envelopes from the post office and also waited anxiously for the postman to arrive at my house,” said Lat.

He would be disappointed whenever the postman brought back the big envelopes but excited when the postman delivered smaller ones which signified that his comics had been accepted.

“I will probably create cartoons on postmen from my memories of them,” he added with a smile.

At a press conference on Stamp Week 2008 yesterday, Pos Malaysia Bhd chairman Tan Sri Dr Aseh Che Mat said:

“We hope the cartoons will encourage children to take up the hobby of collecting stamps as most of them read comics.”

Stamp Week will be held from Dec 1 to 7 and the Lat stamps will be sold at Berjaya Times Square during the period.

Give local cartoonists more prominence: Lat
Updated: Thursday December 4, 2008 MYT 3:59:17 PM

IPOH: Cartoonist Datuk Mohd Nor Khalid more famously known as Lat has a wish that more local cartoonists be given the opportunity to showcase their work in the print and electronic media.

He said their work could be syndicated along the lines of their 50s era western counterparts whose caricatures are published all over Europe, the Americas and Asia.

He named popular cartoonists Jaafar Taib, Zainal Buang Hussin and Ibrahim Anom (Ujang) as among those who should be given the honour.

Lat, who hails from Gopeng near here, told this to reporters after attending the launch of first day covers bearing his cartoons at the Main Post Office here on Thursday. Also present was Pos Malaysia Perak general manager Mohd Azizi Mohd Sanusi.

Pos Malaysia on Monday launched a stamp collection featuring his cartoons. - Bernama
