New Markets | Wolverhampton | Completed

It's time for the markets to move again.

A two storey development constructed out of shipping containers, modeled after Boxpark Shoreditch or Pop Brixton. Incorporating green walls and traditional market stalls.

Planning application submitted.

That's all I can load for now, dunno if it's my connection or theirs. Will see what I can find.

Planning application 17/00282/FUL

The D&A statement alone is 13 long documents... but I can't load them!

Location

Wolverhampton's primest spot, next to the Wulfrun Centre. Former Rackham's department store, later Netto.

My photos.

I was only expecting them to move what they already had, so this is a nice surprise. If done correctly, this could actually be quite nice. Especially if they have a good mixture of stalls (not just the usual bowls of fruit, cheap clothes) and a mixture of street food, it could have a good buzz.

The other thing is, if this doesn't work out, its easy to take down...

The only thing that disappoints me is that the storage yo the rear of the site is such a poor use of space. In the long tern I'd hope these would be replaced by a proper building, perhaps offices above storage units. It takes up about a third of the site.

Also if this works it could be a model for a new Bilston Market.

I love it.

Will certainly make for some perfect urban photography!

I think the storage area should have been made to look more ramschackle, ETC, really play on the shipping container theme.

All documents have now been removed from the application... maybe they weren't meant to be public? There was a lot of detail there.

Image just released by WCC.

I do like it, however i do feel land in such a prominent area would have been better suited to actual buildings of some sort.

I think it could work, if they eventually build on the car park and storage parts. I think the gritty feel could lead to some great grungy retailers setting up in Cleveland Street. Imagine Urban Outfitters or something else grungy.

Yeah I feel the aim here is for urban grit.

It brings with it natural regeneration abilities and an emphasis on independent retail.

Get some street food in and you're golden.

ALL new retail units at the new markets have now been taken, with the council now only taking tenants for food and drink carts - with most of the market stalls themselves also taken. Approved, with construction to begin in August with a break for Christmas.

That's pretty impressive!

Let's hope the council manage to get that final push in place and fill all the stalls!

I think they like to keep a few stalls free for roaming and popup tenants. That used to be an option on their rental thing anyway - basically you get given any empty stand that day.

I bet Cleveland Street won't stay as cheap as it is; this time last year the back of the Wulfrun commanded the lowest rents in the city at £5.5k pa (in contrast the similarly sized units indoors were about £50k).

Value engineered version. No green walls, no external frontages and bigger canopies...

And no rooftop terraces.

External frontage shown on that render, if I'm not mistaken on the far left.

I'm more disappointed with the fewer two tier elements. Though I am happy with the covered walk ways and better canopy situation.

Not happy about them watering this down. The original proposals looks quite good, i really liked the living walls and the street facing frontages. Also adding the second level would have added something that wasn't there before, could have been interesting with different street foods.

I'm not going to become a Wolvo whinger, so i'll reserve full judgement until it is complete in the spring.

It's a modular building. One assumes they can be added if demand is demonstrated.
