Nicer, bigger pic. Can't remember what the rest of the building looks like though.

Birmingham to get its skates on
15:42 | 11.02.08

Birmingham is set to get its first permanent ice-rink in five years following Birmingham City Council’s approval today.

The ice rink has got the go ahead to open in Birmingham’s Chinese Quarter.

The ice rink will be joined by 231 apartments, shops, bars and restaurants as part of a £25m scheme being developed by Dunbar Developments in the Digbeth area.

Dunbar Developments is part of the Cobra Group, which owns and runs ice rinks elsewhere in the UK, will start work later this year.

Birmingham’s former ice rink - Planet Ice on Pershore Street - was destroyed by a blaze in 2003 and has not been replaced.

Louise Brooke-Smith, director of planning consultancy CSJ Brooke-Smith who advised on the scheme, said: ‘Although Birmingham has had temporary Christmas ice rinks for the past couple of years, it’s not the same thing. This is an important addition to the city’s leisure offering.’

Article is slightly misleading - if people didn't know this was a redevelopment of the former site they might think it was being built elsewhere in China Town.

Looks far from miserable! It looks very classy, in my opinion!

I guess its just the browny, smudgy colours. You're right though, it does look classy.

It's a multi-storey car park. It might be going as part of the Wholesale Markets redevelopment, I'm not sure. I know barely anything about that scheme.

The car park is part of the wholesale market block but was recently refurbished if I recall.. I used to go past everyday on the bus! I can't wait to see the old rink demolished and this whole corner tarted up! Its so close to the Bullring but looks like a different world! If I had been out I would go out of my way to walk into town to get the bus home as it seems quite threatening down there at night as it is...

I saw banners going up the other day, and got shots of it this morning. I think the current building is being restored and will be opened as The Leisurebox. According to the banner it will have: The Olympian Ice Skating Rink, UV Tenpin Bowling, Air Hockey, Golf Simulators and Pool Tables. The Leisurebox was Founded 1996 (also according to the new banner).

There you go, its only for the advertisement banner though, nothing to get too excited over yet, Ive looked on the arena groups website to see if theyve got any news or renders but nothing.

Couldn't they also paint the rest of the building? I hate that grey brick. Maybe make it totally blue to give a bit of colour round here.

Talking about grey - jeez the last 2 days have been absolutely miserable bearing in mind that in west Wales and in Devon they've had summer return with temps at around 23c. I have been waiting for that bloody cloud to burn off but it never did!

Whats with the bridge to no where? This building really is a mess, the don't have to knock it down, but at least knock down that silly ramp at the front, it makes it look so messy

I seem to recall them painting it blue / red back when Megabowl was still open. The new owners also must have repainted it blue / red.

I doubt that they'll hide the grey bricks on the left side of the building.

This morning where it was it started out cloudy / cold. Then the sun came out and the sky cleared up, all sky blue (the Greater London area near the M25).

It won't really matter about the side of the building when Travelodge is complete

Glad it's back in use and something else to do in the city centre. Hopefully it will be replaced with a newer version in the fullness of time.
