Cathay Pacific staff leaving in new round of employee exits at airline hit by Hong Kong protests
South China Morning Post Excerpt
Dec 18, 2019

At least three senior employees are to leave Cathay Pacific amid a fresh round of staff departures at the struggling airline, the Post has learned.

Two general managers and the head of a business support unit were understood to have resigned, as industry analysts warned job cuts were inevitable at the carrier, which has been hit hard by the protests in Hong Kong.

But insiders on Tuesday sought to play down the suggestion the exits were the start of a wider reshuffle of the carrier’s 27,000-strong workforce.

It is understood the airline’s highly rated general manager of digital transformation Leslie Lu, whose team is central to the airline delivering efficiencies and cost-savings, is leaving to pursue interests outside the company.

Other changes include the departure of corporate affairs general manager Patrick Yu, as well as the head of one of its customer service teams, according to multiple sources.

Two management trainees are also leaving. The general manager role is one rank down from the level of director, who form the company's top management team.

Cathay Pacific Will Not Cut Flights To New York City ‘One Of Our Most Important Destinations’
Forbes Excerpt
Jan 13, 2020

Despite Hong Kong being half-way around the world, Cathay Pacific has more flights to New York City than most European airlines. That will not change later this year as Cathay plans to continue offering 25 weekly flights after October 2020. There was a flurry of news over the weekend that cited Cathay’s timetable showing it would reduce flights, but a spokesperson says the full schedule is still being loaded.

“Cathay Pacific will continue to operate 25 weekly flights to New York JFK for the Winter 2020 schedule, starting from July 2020. These are all non-stop flights. We are loading our JFK flights onto the system progressively and as such they may not be reflected in full at the moment,” a spokesperson says. Interest in Cathay’s network is high as the airline adjusts to weakened demand from civil unrest in Hong Kong.

New York even earned a special characterization from long-serving Cathay executive John Slosar, who recently retired as the airline’s chairman. “Our views on New York are very much divided into right brain and left brain,” which respectively represent the emotional and intellectual sides of human nature, he told the Wings Club last year.

Cathay Pacific Group Releases Combined Traffic Figures for December 2019
Press Release Excerpt

Thursday, January 16, 2020 — The Cathay Pacific Group today released combined Cathay Pacific and Cathay Dragon traffic figures for December 2019 that show decreases in the number of passengers carried and the amount of cargo and mail uplifted compared to the same month in 2018.

Cathay Pacific and Cathay Dragon carried a total of 2,994,830 passengers last month – a decline of 3.6% compared to December 2018. Passenger load factor increased by 1.2 percentage points to 85%, while capacity, measured in available seat kilometres (ASKs), decreased by 1.3%. For 2019 as a whole, the number of passengers carried declined by 0.7% against a 5.1% increase in capacity as compared to 2018.

The two airlines carried 177,561 tonnes of cargo and mail last month, a decrease of 2.9% compared to the same month last year. The cargo and mail load factor declined by 1.3 percentage points to 66.4%. Capacity, measured in available freight tonne kilometres (AFTKs), was down by 3.8% while cargo and mail revenue freight tonne kilometres (RFTKs) dropped by 5.7%. For 2019 as a whole, the tonnage fell by 6.1% against a 0.3% reduction in capacity and a 6.7% decrease in RFTKs as compared to 2018.

Cathay Pacific Group Chief Customer and Commercial Officer Ronald Lam said: “Demand for travel into Hong Kong continued to be weak in December with our inbound passenger traffic seeing a year-on-year decline of 46% – unchanged from November. The sentiment for travel into Hong Kong was particularly weak on our regional routes such as mainland China, Taiwan and Japan. On the brighter side, our long-haul routes performed well with better load factors. Outbound traffic, meanwhile, was down 4% – a further improvement over the previous few months, but still significantly below what we would expect for a peak holiday month.

“Given the overall weak performance of both our inbound and outbound traffic, we remained heavily focused and reliant upon lower-yield transit traffic via Hong Kong, which grew by 15% compared to the same time in 2018. Overall, our passenger load factor in December improved by 1.2 percentage points from last year to 85%, partly due to a 1.3% reduction in capacity.

Cathay says crew can wear masks on all flights due to new coronavirus
Excerpt
Jan 22, 2020

SYDNEY (Reuters) - Hong Kong’s Cathay Pacific Airways Ltd will allow all crew members and frontline employees to wear surgical masks due to concerns over a new coronavirus, and said passengers to and from Wuhan, China, could change or cancel flights for free through Feb. 15.

The airline had earlier said only cabin crew operating mainland China flights could wear masks, in response to the airline’s flight attendants calling for permission to wear masks on all flights globally as cases have also been confirmed in the United States, Thailand, South Korea, Japan and Taiwan.

“Due to the evolving information from health authorities, we will allow crew members and front-line airport employees to wear surgical face masks when on duty at their discretion,” Cathay said in a statement.
