Indian stunner high rise bid for Coast

A tongue-in-cheek artist's impression of what an Indian-themed high rise could look like

Shannon Willoughby | October 15th, 2009
THE GOLD COAST BULLETIN

A HINDU-inspired tower -- to be named after India's great empire Ashoka and featuring a mini-bazaar -- has been proposed for the middle of Surfers Paradise.

The 30-storey high rise, Ashoka International -- named after Ashoka the Great, an emperor who ruled the country in 230BC -- is before council waiting approval.

The tower has been designed using vaastu -- the Hindu version of feng shui -- and, if approved, will feature an Indian restaurant and a 24-hour coffee and tea house.

It will also include a statue and a plaque of Ashoka the Great, allowing visitors to learn about Indian history.

Jack and Sharon Singh, the couple behind the masterplan, hope the tower will attract more big-spending Indians to the Gold Coast.

The couple own the motel on the corner of Markwell Avenue and Surfers Paradise Boulevard, the site destined for the future high rise.

"We want to have a tower that is peaceful and Ashoka means peace and we want to attract many Indians to the Gold Coast," said Mrs Singh, whose family business also includes an Indian restaurant in Broadbeach.

"There are many Indians on the Gold Coast and we think there could be more. Many Indians have money to spend on holidays and we would like them to come here.

"This name, Ashoka, is known to every Indian. He is the man who brought Buddhism to India. He was the ruler of India for many years.

"We have designed it using a traditional method which means it will be very attractive to Indians. The design allows lots of natural light into the 109 apartments.
"All apartments above the second floor will have a view of the ocean."

The couple, who have had management rights businesses across the Gold Coast, is looking for a joint venture partner to help create the tower.

The concept is being marketed to developers here and abroad, says agent Akira Morita, who has strong ties to Japan. Mr Morita said the concept had already raised interest with potential joint venture partners in both Japan and further afield.

The building, designed by BDA Architecture, sits on a 1600sqm block.

Included is 440sqm of commercial space which will include a convenience store and a 24-hour coffee and tea house.

It will also have retail shops, a conference centre and a beauty salon.

"It will be India meets the West," said Mrs Singh.

"The high rise is very beautiful and it will help draw attention to this end of Surfers Paradise."

Its a stupid photoshop by the Gold Coast Bulletin - it is not an actual render.

I will reserve my judgment for now.

Personally, I would imagine any "Hindu inspired" skyscraper would look hideous, irrelevant and inappropriate. I mean why stop there...lets build an ancient Chinese inspired tower and then even an Aboriginal dreamtime tribute tower.....
Stupid idea.

Depends - if it has a subtle Hindu theme, no problems. If it is a building that looks like it belongs in Delhi, then I agree.

BTW the 'developers' own an Indian restaurant so don't be surprised if they don't have enough experience to get this off the ground.

Ever been to Shanghai? They're everywhere and ones like the Jin Mao tower incorporate chinese design elements and look stunning.

Any hindu-inspired tower would have a massive impact on the skyline (though the article says 30 stores so maybe not that massive). Agree with tic, I'll wait for better renders.

Good. I just don't think we would want anything to take away from the beauty of COC or Soul.

Or it'll look like a complete joke and make even the skyline look so tacky it's out of a theme park.

Actually it made me think of the Mandarin in Singapore.

Gold Coast for better or worse is becoming more and more like an Australian Dubai.

The buildings on the Gold Coast tend to "flow". I find the ones in Dubai somewhat clash and don't "flow" so to speak. Sure the Gold Coast, to some may look tacky but I find Dubai on the verge of being repulsive.

Yeah but the Jin Mao building is a 'subtle' Chinese style building....

...and it's in China!

This is a bad idea.

What happened to the GC.

Two years ago we were contemplating Zaha Hadid 101 storey towers on the GC and now the place has been reduced to whacky comedy renders.

Location is still being debated in the Gold Coast forum, however the intersection given is one block south of Q1.It is definately not on the beach like the render though.
