CTBUH announces the projected world's tallest 20 skyscrapers in the year 2020

Within this decade we will likely witness not only the world’s first kilometer-tall building, but also the completion of a significant number of buildings over 600 meters (around 2,000 feet) – that’s twice the height of the Eiffel Tower. Two years ago, prior to the completion of the Burj Khalifa, this building type did not exist. And yet, by 2020, we can expect at least eight such buildings to exist internationally. The term “supertall” (which refers to a building over 300 meters) is thus no longer adequate to describe these buildings: we are entering the era of the “megatall.” This term is now officially being used by the Council to describe buildings over 600 meters in height, or double the height of a supertall.

I love Skyscrapers, but find the whole megatall and race to be the world's tallest thing rather "meh" these days.

I think you're right. I don't see the point of building kilometre high skyscrapers. As for Australia, I would rather see a few more decent 240-270 metre plus tallies in Brisbane and Melbourne for instance, than an ugly 500 metre tower that would look ridiculous anyway, apart from probably being commercialy unviable.

'The Khazar Islands are a development of artificial islands to be constructed in the Caspian Sea off Garadag, southwest of Baku.'

I was thinking the same thing. Those paved parks with grass that run the length of the internal waterway have nothing in them to warrant significant use - they look like a big long carpark. This is probably just the initial concept, but still, poor masterplanning IMO.

... when will they learn..

Not necessarily - could be like the Corniche in Abu Dhabi, which is beautifully landscaped and full of parks, cafe's and water activities.

Not sure where to post this as it's not neccessarily a building but just elevator,.

Going up: Japan builder eyes space elevator
February 23, 2012 - 8:23AM

A Japanese construction firm has claimed it could execute an out-of-this-world plan to put tourists in space within 40 years by building an elevator that stretches a quarter of the way to the moon.

Obayashi Corp claims it could use carbon nanotube technology, which is more than 20 times stronger than steel, to build a lift shaft 96,000 kilometres above the Earth.

The company said on Wednesday it would carry up to 30 passengers at a time and travel at a speed of 200 kilometres per hour for a week, stopping off at a station at 36,000 kilometres.

Tourists would stay there, but researchers and specialists would be able to travel all the way to the end, said Satomi Katsuyama, the project's leader.

"Humans have long adored high towers," she said. "Rather than building it from the earth, we will construct it from the space."

However, while Obayashi says the plan could work, there are presently no estimates for the cost of the structure, nor any idea where to build it, or who would pay for it.

Obayashi is just days away from completing work on Japan's tallest structure, the Tokyo Sky Tree, which will stand 634 metres.

The tower will serve as a digital broadcasting antenna as well as a sightseeing attraction that allows uninterrupted views of the Japanese capital and beyond.

"We were inspired by construction of Sky Tree," which will open for business in May, she said. "Our experts on construction, climate, wind patterns, design, they say it's possible."

When Obayashi is not drawing up plans to conquer space it works on a number of projects from building corporate headquarters, bridges and power plants to renovating ancient temples.

Among its portfolio are the Dubai Metro in United Arab Emirates, Universal Studios Osaka, Japan, and Stadium Australia, which was used for the Sydney Olympics.

It looks like a heap of shit, much like like someone got the idea from stringing together a few of toilet rolls or as DMT puts it "a cluster**** of lipsticks' Design failure of the century.
