India’s longest road tunnel built on Jammu-Srinagar National Highway will open to traffic very soon following successful completion of trial run.

The work on the 9.2 km-long twin-tube tunnel, which is part of a 286-km-long four-lane project on the highway, started on May 23, 2011 in lower Himalayan mountain range, and cost Rs 3,720 crore, officials said.

The tunnel, which is located at an elevation of 1200 meters, will be the first in India to be equipped with world class “integrated tunnel control system” through which ventilation, fire control, signals, communication and electrical systems will be automatically actuated.

It will reduce the travel time between the two state capitals of Jammu and Srinagar by two-and-a-half hours. The road distance from Chenani and Nashri will now be 10.9 km, instead of the existing 41 km, they said.

“The formal trial run was successfully completed for peak, off peak hours between March 9 and March 15,” Project Director, IL&FS, J S Rathore told PTI.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi is likely to inaugurate the highway tunnel by month-end.

“The tunnel will be formally thrown open to general vehicular traffic after the inauguration by Prime Minister Narendra Modi soon,” Rathore said.

Once the tunnel becomes operational, it will reduce the traffic jams on National Highway-1A that occur due to snowfall and avalanches in winter at Patnitop, Rathore said.

Travel will cost an LMV vehicle Rs 55 on one side and Rs 85 for to-and-fro journey and Rs 1,870 for one month travel, while bigger vehicles like mini buses will have pay Rs 90 as one side toll and Rs 135 for to-and-fro toll. Buses and trucks will have pay Rs 190 as one side toll and Rs 285 as two side toll.

Highlighting the salient features of this state-of-art hi-tech tunnel, Rathore informed that Infrastructure Leasing and Financial Services (IL&FS) Company has setup a well-equipped fully computerized operation room for surveillance of vehicles inside the twin tubes.

“For feeding input to the aforesaid Operation Room, 124 CCTV cameras have been installed at equal intervals of 75 meters, three-tier system has been fitted to light-up the tunnels round the clock,” Rathore said.

An innovative SOS system has also been introduced to make contact with the team sitting in the Operation Room in case of an emergency besides effective fire fighting gadgets and hyper-sensitive ventilation system to ensure hassle free journey.

“The maximum speed limit permitted for vehicles plying inside twin tunnel tubes is 50 km per hour with head lights on at low beam.

“Containers carrying inflammable material are banned from entering the tunnel,” he said

The Traffic problems near Bhaurch Section on NH8 does not seem to be fully over. This is the live traffic update and at the time of writing this was red just before you go to the Cable Bridge. Seems on more Flyover is pending to be completed & hence the traffic problems on this section continues as it is!

It is also under construction with flyover crossing over a flyover kind 11.9 Km long elevated expressway. It is at an advanced stage of construction with 80% slab work done.

note: the video being a little old , it is showing the expressway crossing underneath the flyover but in changed recent plan it is going above it.

PM Narendra Modi To Inaugurate India's Longest Bridge - Dhola-Sadiya Bridge On May 26

Dibrugarh: India's longest river bridge, capable of withstanding the weight of a 60-tonne battle tank, will be inaugurated in Assam close to the border with China on May 26 by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. With the inauguration of the 9.15-km-long Dhola-Sadiya bridge over the Brahmaputra river, Prime Minister Narendra Modi will start the celebrations of the NDA government's three years in office from this eastern-most part of Assam.

It is 3.55 km longer than the Bandra-Worli sea link in Mumbai, making it the longest bridge in India.

The bridge is seen as an attempt by India to shore up its defence requirements along the Sino-Indian border, particularly in the northeast, besides providing easy access to the people of Arunachal Pradesh and Assam with air and rail connectivity.

"The prime minister will dedicate the strategically important bridge to the nation on May 26. It will bolster the road connectivity in the Northeast as the bridge will be used by people of Assam and Arunachal Pradesh besides defence forces extensively," Assam Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal told PTI.

The construction of the bridge began in 2011 at a project cost of Rs. 950 crore. The design is such that the bridge can withstand the movement of military tanks.

"Assam and Arunachal Pradesh have huge strategic value to the country. Since the bridge is located close to our border with China, it will help quick movement of military troops and artillery in times of conflict," Mr Sonowal said.

The bridge is located 540-km away from Assam's capital Dispur and 300 km away from Arunachal Pradesh's capital Itanagar. The aerial distance to the Chinese border is less than 100 km.

After Kaliabhomora bridge near Tezpur, there is no bridge over the Brahmaputra for the next 375 km upstream till Dhola, where the new bridge is constructed. Currently, all transportation between the river's two banks is carried out through water only.

The bridge, when opened for the public, will cut down the travel time between Assam and Arunachal Pradesh by as much as four hours.

As there is no civilian airport in Arunachal Pradesh, this bridge will help people of the state to reach the nearest rail head in Tinsukia and the airport in Dibrugarh easily.

Mr Sonowal said the delayed works of the bridge was expedited after PM Modi assumed the charge in 2014. The bridge was originally scheduled to open in 2015.

The BJP government in Assam will complete one year in office on May 24.

The bridge is one of the key projects of the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways in the Northeast and is built in public-private partnership with a construction compan

New bridge over Savitri in Mahad built in record 165 days

The highways ministry and Maharashtra Public Works Department (PWD) have set a record of building a bridge over a river in just 165 days.
The three-lane bridge on Savitri river near Mahad, which will be opened for public use on Monday, has been built alongside the British-era bridge that was washed away during the last monsoon.

The 239-m bridge was built at a cost of Rs 37.55 crore. “We have created a record. I and Maharashtra chief minister Devendra Fadnavis will inaugurate the bridge on June 5,“ highways minister Nitin Gadkari said. He added that the focus of infrastructure development should be quick delivery and usage of new technology for faster pace of construction.

The bridge is part of Panvel-Mahad-Panjim NH66, which connects Mumbai to Goa and other southern states. In August last year, the old masonry arch bridge built in 1928 had collapsed and at least 29 people had died. Two buses were also swept away. This stretch of NH is managed by the state PWD.

Ministry sources said considering the huge traffic flow on this highway corridor, Gadkari had announced a new bridge soon after the mishap.

The survey, design and detailed estimate was prepared by the PWD within three weeks and without involving consultants. “The proposal was sanctioned in 13 days. The tender was floated on the day the proposal was approved. Work on building the new bridge started in December and was completed in less than six months,“ an official said.

The new bridge has features such as flood alarm system, while anti-corrosive steel and anti-carbonation paint were used.

The ministry is focusing on using new technology and promoting innovation to cut down the time taken for building highways.

Gadkari had stressed on use of pre-cast segments for quicker completion of road and bridge projects.
