From today's hearing.

APPROVED 83C14-2013-0158 – 7th and Congress Hotel – Approve second and third readings of an ordinance amending City Code Chapter 25-2 by rezoning property locally known as 619 and 621 Congress Avenue (Lady Bird Lake Watershed) from central business district (CBD) district zoning to central business district-central urban redevelopment (CBD-CURE) combining district zoning. First reading approved on October 16, 2014. Vote: 7-0. Owner: Finley Company (Tim Finley, VP). Applicant: Matt Frankiewicz. Agent: Armbrust & Brown, PLLC (Lynn Ann Carley). City Staff: Lee Heckman, 512-974-7604. A valid petition has been filed in opposition to this rezoning request.
All it needed was a 2/3 approval.

This wasn't approved. It appears a mistake may have been made on the City Council website. It initially appeared as approved, but it was updated to show that the developers wanted to postpone the vote until 12/11. This one is having a tough time getting city council support, and the developers are trying to put together a plan that better addresses the Council's parking concern and the crybaby hippy NIMBYs that run a playhouse next door.

Wholly Cow Burgers set to close downtown store; New hotels to follow

Quote:
Feb 27, 2015, 7:51am CST

This will be the last weekend to chow down at the Wholly Cow Burgers restaurant on Congress Avenue, as Coventus Corp and Finley Co. are set to demolish the building to make way for a new 32-story Aloft & Element Austin Downtown hotels.

"Even though we knew the demolition and development was inevitable once the building's historical status was changed, and the demolition application was approved by the prior City Council last year; we're all sadden that it came on short notice for our guests and staff," said owner and chef Jefferey Woodard in a statement. "As a family business, we feel all of our guests and staff are a part of the family and we are working hard to maintain good family relations."

[...]

The hotel that will be standing at Wholly Cow's spot at Congress Avenue and Seventh Street will house two Starwood hotel brands, Aloft and Element, which combined would add another 410 rooms to Austin's booming hotel scene. Developers hope to have the hotel complete by summer 2016.

The site plan for this was approved and released by the city last week. It has financing and demo has begun on the site - there is nothing holding this back now.

In the past seven months, White Lodging Corp. has delivered two high-rise hotels in downtown Austin. The hospitality developer isn't easing up on the gas pedal.

Company officials are set for the formal groundbreaking for a 32-story, dual hotel tower at Congress Avenue and Seventh Street on Aug. 24, including two hotel brands within the complex: Aloft Austin Downtown and Element Austin Downtown.

When the project was originally announced in April 2014, White Lodging estimated the completion in the summer of 2016. Instead, the delivery is scheduled for the summer of 2017.
