The land is owned by the Cathedral. This building will no doubt be dedicated to the glory of God. This will be most appropriate and the crowning glory of New York City. Go for it, no hold barred!!

Then they should build a 500m Neo Gothic church tower... with some office space of course. The bell can be also be a tuned mass damper, because why not?

I was just joking. I would like this to be a more inspired design but all out church bell tower is ridiculous.

I can't wait for all the crybabies to eventually announce that 'it's grown on them' once the building goes up.

At least it would atone for his monstrosity, also known as 432 Park Avenue.

I honestly haven't seen anything to make me dislike this tower. Even if it does end up being ugly, which I would say is a stretch based on the renderings, it's just one of hundreds of buildings, even if its among the tallest. The facade seems simple but there's nothing wrong with simplicity. I think more people would be upset if it were a glass curtain wall. Just think for a second how many of those types we have rising at the moment.
The cantilevered floors are jarring at first glance, but after taking them in, I think they're potentially iconic. We don't have anything like that in the city. The one on 30 Hudson Yards is a mere platform. We're talking entire floors here. 56 Leonard is also similar, but its a skinnier, private residential building. The only building I can think of in the entire country that is similar would be the New Orleans Plaza Tower, and this tower looks a lot nicer than that one, in my opinion. I think this would make a decent pinnacle for midtown until something taller inevitably rises to usurp it.

That Nola tower is hideous and unoccupied. So I don’t it bodes well for this NY tower design!

Can someone photoshop in a placeholder for the new JP Morgan Chase building in the rendering above? It would be nice to see how all these new upcoming tall towers work together in regards to mass and height.

This tower needs a satisfactory crown. I don't mind it being a box, boxes can look good (example: Seagram Building). I would just like it to have a classical stepped back crown instead of the asymetrical flat top. A crown like that of 9DeKalb would look great IMO.

NEW YORK | Tower Fifth | 474m | 1556ft | 96 fl | Pro

[QUOTE=streetscapeer;156287272]https://www.instagram.com/p/BtYJBuXg...=1pfmqv7p22uof

These new towers -though individually interesting up close - present as too " fence posted " and scattered when seen from afar, imo . A more esthetically awe-inspiring new crop of skyscrapers in the built up urban core of Manhattan Island should have been more closely massed
and falling away from the tallest new ones sited centrally . But with today's concerns of daylight planes , NIMBYISM , market mandatory $80 million dollar unobstructed 360 degree views of these mixed use/residential buildings vs pure office -grunt tower blocks , it was/is inevitable how it's turning out .

Indeed. Compared to the ESB built nearly 90 years ago it's especially shameful. In fact take ESB out of the picture taken across from the Hudson and I bet not many people would know what city it is even in the years to come.

It's just supertall for supertalls sake.

Have to say I love how ESB bosses that Hudson picture. Build them as tall as you like but there is only one king of NYC.
