MILAN/CORTINA - 2026 Winter Olympic Games | Games of the XXV Olympiad

The city of Milan and the ski resort of Cortina d'Ampezzo have been announced as the hosts of the 2026 Winter Olympics. The International Olympic Committee voted for Italy's bid ahead of Stockholm-Are, Sweden, to stage the event. With such result, Italy has made history: no country has ever won two Winter (or Summer) Olympic bid elections against at least one other nation in a 20-year span and held the Winter (or Summer) Games twice in that stretch. The last time that Italy hosted the Games was in 2006, in Turin.

There were only two candidates left after other bidders - Sion (Switzerland), Sapporo (Japan), Graz (Austria), Calgary (Canada), Erzerum (Turkey) - had earlier dropped out of the race with concerns over the event's size and cost.

Discover how the Milan-Cortina Candidature Committee describes their vision for the Games and the legacy they plan to leave behind:

Quote:
The Milan-Cortina 2026 Candidature fully embraces the IOC’s Olympic Agenda 2020/New Norm, putting the long-term development strategies and challenges of the host cities and regions at the centre.

We will contribute to a golden decade of Olympic and Paralympic sport, placing Milan-Cortina alongside other leading international cities, to help reposition the Games in modern society.

The selection of the venues is fully aligned with the ambition of northern Italy to become a world-class hub of excellence for winter sports. The Games will showcase the quality of the selected sports infrastructure and help to invest in renovating/upgrading those venues that need investments.

The Games will also be conducive to greater cooperation in the entire Alpine macro-region, to improve the attractiveness of the mountains as a place to live and reverse the trend of depopulation.

Finally, the Games are a unique opportunity to showcase Italy’s design style that has seen the “Made in Italy” brand become synonymous with excellence all over the world.

Main Ice Hockey Venue
PalaItalia / Santa Giulia Arena
Milan
(15,000-18,000 seats)

The PalaItalia/Santa Giulia Arena is expected to be built in Milan's Rogodero neighborhood. It was planned despite the Games.
The arena will be equipped with commercial services that will be open every day of the week.

The position of Santa Giulia Arena will facilitate strong integration with the area's commercial facilities, entertainment and residential areas, services, museum and the adjacent 380,000 sqm park, thereby generating mutual benefits.

The appeal of Santa Giulia Arena will increase the number of visitors to the retail pedestrian areas (dedicated mainly to design and interior furnishing, with showrooms, artisanal boutiques and art galleries), interspersed by restaurants, bars and cafés with outdoor seating, so that different times of day can be fully enjoyed. At same time the retail opportunities and the proximity to the park will enrich the experience of attending events at the arena (pre/post-event).

The arena will have a highly flexible space: indeed, its infrastructure is planned and designed to ensure rapid, efficient turnover. This will ensure efficient management of events. The arena will be equipped with commercial services that will be open every day of the week for most of the day, ensuring that the area remains vibrant even in the evening.

Olympic Villages -Preview-
Main | Milan

The construction of the Olympic Village in Milan is part of the wider regeneration project of the Porta Romana Railway Yard, a dismitted site spanning over a surface of 216,614 sqm (or 2,331,614 sqft). The project is fully aligned with an overall regeneration programme of seven different railway yards throughout the city, as described in the 2030 City Development Plan.

The city of Milan and FS Sistemi Urbani -a company 100% owned by FS, the Italian State Railway company, which is the owner of the rail yard- will launch a competition for the designing of Porta Romana. Construction work of the Olympic Village is scheduled to begin in 2022 and it will be completed in 2025. The Olympic Village will be converted into a residential campus for students post-Games. The specific need for additional student housing is a clearly identified priority, as set out in the new General Development Master Plan of the City of Milano.

Unofficial Master Plan - Old proposal by Cino Zucchi Architetti for the redevelopment of Porta Romana Railway Yard.

Mountain | Cortina

The Olympic Village in Cortina, Flames area, involves the provision of temporary units that can be relocated. These are made of prebuilt modules that are assembled to create apartment buildings on a concrete base. The apartments use highly technological energy sources and are equipped with solar panels, making them a highly-sustainable accommodation option. Based on the existing modules, each housing block can house twin and single rooms, all with en suite facilities.

Post-Games, the National Civil Defence Department has already expressed an interest in these facilities, to be used as apartments that can be relocated across Italy, for example in case of earthquakes, floods or other natural disasters. This will provide a national legacy for the benefit of society.

Mountain | Livigno

The temporary component of the Olympic Village in Livigno will also be kept for use by the National Civil Defence Department for the same purpose described above. In addition, the permanent housing blocks, which can accommodate up to 300 people, will host a training and physical preparation centre for elite athletes. To ensure a full use of the facility, it will also serve as residential housing for seasonal workers, who are normally employed in a variety of activities and often lack residential units at affordable prices.

Work in progress...

Design competition for the logo and the Olympic torch.

Quote:
"The logo of the 2026 Winter Olympic Games will be redesigned" said Milan Sports Councillor Roberta Guaineri, after having added the Milano-Cortina logo was temporary. "We will launch a competition both for the logo and the city brand, which are two fundamental things for the success of the Games". "The same procedure will also be applied for the Olympic torch" she said. (...) But how the city's excellences (including fashion and design) will affect a glamorous event like the Winter Games? "In many fields: from athletes' uniforms to hotels, from catering to collateral events".

I hope Milano succeeds with the Porta Romana Olympic Village (and then student dorms) where NYC failed with their Hudson Yard Olympic Stadium 2012; and LA 2024's original Piggyback Railyards and their first stab at a brand-new Olympic Village. But that part of Milano is really nondescript and UGLY!!

Wow! Part of the OV buildings are over the main Railway station. I bet security will be pretty oppressive there.

That is a dismissed railways yard. There are just two tracks working where local service run on. Of course ther is a station (which will be 'redefined' by the project) but it's more like a metro service station

Porta romana is a nice and well preserved district, with lots of early XX buildings, the Fondazione Prada is there...the railway yard of the station is the last missing brick to the district.

AC Milan and FC Inter submit preliminary masterplan to build new sporting and entertainment district.
Built in 1926, the Meazza Stadium could face demolition.

Quote:
FC Inter Milan and AC Milan, the Milanese football teams playing in Serie A League, presented the preliminary masterplan for their new stadium at San Siro district. It's a 1.2 billion euros plan (700 million for the stadium only) involving private investment to build a new modern sports and entertainment destination in the same area where the current Giuseppe Meazza Stadium is.

The investments will be supported by AC Milan and FC Internazionale, following the granting of a 90-year surface right, to be assigned by public tender launched by the Municipality of Milan, for which the two clubs, as proponents, will have a right of first refusal.

The new world-class stadium will have a capacity of 60,000-65,000 seats (12,000 for the VIPs area only) and shopping/dining/leisure/entertainment buildings, which represent a gathering place able to welcome citizens, fans and tourists 365 days a year, giving employment to over 3,500 people. The project would include offices, hotel, congress center and other services.

An architectural competition will be launched to find the best design for the new stadium.

The entire project will take three years to be completed, according to Inter and Milan, with the chance to host the Opening Ceremony of the 2026 Olympic Winter Games.

The realization of the new stadium involves two distinct phases.

PHASE I (work in the West area):
- execution of the excavations and construction of the new stadium;
- removal of the Patroclo Underpass, which will be rebuilt, extending its width and connected to the internal viability of the compartment;
- construction of west buildings.

PHASE II (work in the East area):
- demolition of the G. Meazza stadium;
- excavations and construction of complementary buildings.

Opening Ceremony
New San Siro Stadium

It's Populous vs. Progetto CMR-David Manica for the new FC Inter Milan and AC Milan Stadium. The two groups have remained in race after Stefano Boeri Architects and HOK did not enter in the second phase of the competition.

The Populous's plan for the new world-class stadium of Inter and Milan will remind fans of both clubs of the city's historical, famous Duomo. The concept is that of a "Cathedral of football", with galleries around the central body whose arches recall the architectural masterpieces of Piazza Duomo. But the design also reminds some architectural features of the old San Siro. The new stadium will be a parallelogram covered in glass with a real futuristic design to it. The stadium would have spires and it would play a lot of lights and glass, allowing different colors depending on the team involved.

The other proposal is that of Progetto CMR and David Manica. Their design is equally beautiful and modern, but more traditional: its hallmark would be two huge rings that cross, to symbolize the coexistence of the two football clubs in the same house.

The new stadium, however, should be built nearby the Meazza. The latter, built-in 1925, will be demolished according to the proposed plans. The transformation of the surrounding area includes park, offices, restaurants, boutiques, museums, entertainment, hotel, services and more. The total private investment amounts to over 1.23 billion euros.
