I'm a bit confused as to why B&MB is closed given that their main entrance is on English Street - is it to do with having all fire exits accessible or is there a risk of the Plaza building falling onto B&MB?

Thanks for all the photo updates, by the way.

I have been told by someone who works for a business nearby that it is indeed due to the side entrance on Victoria Viaduct, which was one of the fire exits from B & M Bargains, being unavailable for use.

There is also the matter of falling debris which is now recognised as being rather more likely than originally thought due to the Central Plaza building being in a significantly worse condition than anticipated prior to the first inspection.

House of Fraser

Fingers crossed that the intu Metrocentre House of Fraser isn't one of the 31 out of 59 stores which are to close.

Edit: Metrocentre appears to be safe but Carlisle, Middlesbrough and Darlington proposed for closure.

Closure of the Carlisle store would not surprise me. On the occasions I have been in over the years I have always been struck by how few customers seemed to be in there and what a badly laid out shop it was. The constraints of the building clearly had a bearing on this, but I am sure it could have been arranged better than it was.

The modern Debenhams at the bottom of the road also served to highlight the inadequacies of the House of Fraser store.

Approved, with conditions, yesterday according to The News & Star, although no decision notice has appeared on the planning portal yet, which is a bit unusual. The major condition is that it can only open from 6am to 11pm, not the 24 hours originally applied for.

Having had a look through the planning portal there seem to have been quite a few changes since the initial application.
