Portion of Sardar Bridge closed for repairs

SURAT: A portion of Sardar Bridge, which connects city’s Athwa area with Adajan on the other side of the Tapi river, was closed by the civic authorities for repairs on Thursday.

Surat Municipal Corporation officials said the repairs would incur a cost of Rs9 crore. The repair work on both sides would be completed within 80 days, sources added.

The bridge, which was built in 1992, has a capacity of 25,000 passenger car units (PCU) on one side during peak hours. Expansion of the bridge and inauguration of cable-stayed bridge in the past six months have eased pressure on Sardar Bridge. The closure is likely to increase traffic on the remaining two newly constructed lanes of the bridge. The peak hour traffic density on the bridge is about 20,000 PCUs.

An officer of SMC’s bridge department said, “It is for the first time that such repairs are being undertaken on the bridge since it was built. The repair works will increase the bridge’s lifespan by 30 years.”

Some tar here and there but nowhere in Vesu & Katargam!

SURAT: Roads in posh Vesu and Katargam municipal zones in the city have returned to their original pre make-up looks. After moderate rain in the past 24 hours washed away all the cosmetic touch, SMC’s much proclaimed repair works, done some 40 days ago, stand exposed in all its naked reality today.

Skirting around pond-like water puddles on the middle of the roads have turned commuters here into acrobats. In Vesu of Athwa zone, major parts of roads from Aagam arcade to Someswara complex are filled with huge potholes and leave commuters, especially for those who have to pass from these areas twice a day, not only jumping in their seats and hurting their spines, but also damaging their vehicles.

Katargam is the worst affected zone and people riding on two and four wheelers are worst hit. Major roads of the zone like Katargam Darwaja to Katargam zone office road, road going towards Katargam Balashram is riddled with craters on both sides. What’s worse is the ride on the gravel-filled roads now after they lost the thin tar cover in the recent bout of rain.

Road going towards Kansanagar from Katargam Darwaja and the one from Ved Darwaja to Katargam Darwaja, another to Ladarwaja from Manav Ashram are poor examples of roads which are difficult to distinguish from unlaid portion of land. “Come towards Lal Darwaja junction if you want to jump around your seat,” said Uday Ramani, a diamond businessman from Katargam area, who spewed venom on SMC for its bad patch work on roads that are now damaging vehicles too.

But Surat Municipal Corporation (SMC) has an answer to all issues, though by its own admission says “nearly 25 per cent of each zone’s bitumen roads are damaged.” “Water and tar don’t go together and so all paver work stopped during monsoon,” a senior official explained. He added that whatever is done is a “stop gap arrangement” done for “people’s convenience” and only in dry season that “good patch work” will be redone!

However, he added a silver lining: “We have started converting many bitumen (Tar) roads into concrete ones which will last the beating of water and rain.”

An Update for Pal Umra bridge after almost 1.5 years

Pal-Umara bridge "may" open for public by February 2020

SURAT: There is good news for over 10 lakh residents in Pal and Adajan in the diamond city. The much-awaited bridge on Tapi River connecting Pal and Umara is likely to be thrown open for public use by February 2020.

The work for the construction of approach road connecting the Rs 89 crore worth of Pal-Umara bridge, which was in peril since long time, is likely to start soon with eight out of 20 families, obstructing the approach of the bridge at Umara, agreeing to shift to another location provided by the SMC.

This will be the fifth bridge across the Tapi River connecting Adajan with different areas including Athwalines, Nanpura, Chowk Bazaar and Umara.
Municipal commissioner, Banchha Nidhi Pani told TOI, “The long stuck issue of Pal-Umara bridge will be sorted out soon and we hope to complete the construction of approach at Umara within three months.”

“Eight out of 20 families, whose houses are obstructing the approach end at Umara side have agreed to shift to alternate land provided by SMC. The other 12 families have been invited for meeting in a day or two and that they too will agree to the alternative land allotment,” he added.

Pani said, “We have been providing alternative land to the affected families very close to the bridge project. Until now, these people had no documentation record of their property and thus we were unable to give them the land. Now, all have agreed to create their record, so the land allotment process will become smoother.”

The civic body was facing tough challenge from the residents in Umara, who were not willing to vacate their houses for the construction of approach portion of the bridge.

Makeover of space under Parle Point overbridge on the anvil

Surat: How about relaxing in a garden with your loved ones below Parle Point overbridge? If it sounds good, then there’s more to whet your apetite. The Surat civic body plans to beautify the stretch from Ambika Niketan circle to Sargam shopping centre at a cost of Rs2.68 crore which will comprise a food plaza, a garden and a dozen sculptures.

This 10,100sq metre of space below the Veer Shahid Bhagat Singh flyover will be the first space where the Surat Municipal Corporation will undertake such beautification project.

“The basic reason why this place was chosen is because it is highly populated and is a posh area which has a traffic density of around 7,000 vehicles per hour during evening and morning office hours,” said an official from Athwa zone.

The official further said that in addition to the huge footfall the area witnesses daily, the weekends are especially chock-a-block with large number of people venturing on this road towards Dumas via Gaurav Path.

“We plan to decorate and provide a small recreational cum eating spot for people who flock the area,” he added.

Under this beautification scheme, apart from a 50,000 litre capacity underground water tank, there will be five pay and park spaces for 143 four wheelers and 175 two wheelers in 4,620 sq metre area. It will have gardens set up with a water fountains and a water wall. It will be decorated with five wall murals and paintings, 46 sculptures and 61 signages and bench furniture. Food kiosks and stalls will also be permitted in the area.

“We expect to complete the work in coming six months and complete it by April 2020,” said a senior official. He also said that space will be provided near Ambika Niketan temple for people to spend some quality time with family here.

Faltering Surat's Outer Ring Road project gains some momentum

SURAT: The work to build 67km-long Outer Ring Road in Surat district has picked up pace with five ancillary roads nearing completion.

A major portion of the Outer Ring Road will be ready by August 2020. The project, started a few years ago was expected to be completed by March 2019, but has been delayed by over a year.

The road is being developed as high density corridor and is spread over 2,669 hectares of land. This Rs5,050 crore project will save huge amount of time and fuel of commuters travelling in their vehicles from Vadodara to Surat.

The project has already incurred initial expenses of Rs606 crore.Of these 18km-long ancillary roads, the Sayan-Kadodara stretch will help in reducing congestion at Kadodara and also provide a fillip to development in the vicinity.

“These roads will save time and fuel of people passing through Surat. It will also reduce traffic congestion. These radial roads will save at least 25 minutes of fuel and time of a vehicle driver as he/she will get entry point early from National Highway and reach the heart of the city sooner,” said Jatin Shah, general manager, Urban Road Development Corporation Limited (URDCL).

The first phase of the project will see construction of a 27-km stretch of Outer Ring Road to facilitate 11 town planning schemes. It would be a 42-metre wide road with six lanes and two service roads on both sides with middle corridor left for BRTS and metro rail.

wow lol. why not had CCTV from the start?

Even iconic cable-stayed bridge isn’t safe from crafty Surat thieves!

Surat: Nothing is theft-proof in Surat — be it residences, vegetables, or even the iconic cable-stayed bridge! In fact, such is the menace that two days ago thieves climbed 35 metres up the bridge, to cut around 200 metres of earthing cable wire that is used to light the obstruction light for aircraft.

What’s more interesting is that no passers-by on this otherwise traffic-heavy bridge connecting Adajan and Athwalines, nor even the police noticed the drama happening mid-air at a height of more than 10 stories.

Be that as it may, this is not the only instance when the Rs 143 crore worth bridge was assaulted by thieves. Around 47 high-quality LED lights of 108 watts, four decorative light fittings, two light controller, 12 iron cages and 800 metre cable wire worth around Rs 5 lakh was stolen from the bridge in June. What’s more, thieves escaped with the iron cages that were meant to protect the LED lights!

Additional city engineer KH Khatwani told TOI: “We received complaints that the decorative lights were out of order for the past many days. We conducted an inspection and found that the lights were stolen! The LED lights fitted to illuminate the bridge at night were stolen immediately after the bridge was inaugurated last year.”

Khatwani said that the LED lighting on the bridge was a centre of attraction for the people who loved to click pictures of the bridge at night. “Not stopping at that, the thieves targeted the bridge again two days ago and this time it was literally the height of theft! They cut away the earthing cable wire for obstruction light for aircraft at the top of the bridge,” he added.
Khatwani said a theft complaint has been lodged with the city police and investigations are on.

Executive engineer of SMC’s bridge department, Akshay Pandya said that work order for installing CCTV camera on the cable-stayed bridge has been issued after the repeated incidents of thefts.

Weir-cum-causeway opens for commuters after four months

Surat: Hundreds of commuters travelling between Adajan, Katargam and Varachha heaved a sigh of relief on Friday with the opening of the weir-cum-causeway after four-long months.

The low-level bridge, which connects Adajan and Rander with Ved Road, Katargam and Varachha was closed for vehicular traffic following continuous release of water from Ukai dam. The traffic problems had aggravated on the Nehru Bridge and the Gilani Bridge due to closure of the weir-cum-causeway.

This was first time in the last many years that the weir-cum-causeway remained closed for major part of the monsoon due release of water from Ukai dam. Till few days ago, the water level at the low-level bridge was above danger level mark. However, as the release of the water stopped from the Ukai dam, the water receded and the bridge was opened for the vehicular traffic from Thursday evening.

More than six lakh commuters travel to and fro between Adajan-Rander, Ved Road, Katargam and Varachha on daily basis. Apart from the office-goers, majority of the people connected with the diamond industry in Varachha and Katargam use the weir-cum-causeway bridge for their daily travel.

Ghanshyam Gabani, a diamond unit owner who resides in Adajan said, “I had to take a detour of around two kilometre daily from the Gilani Bridge to reach my unit in Varachha. The weir-cum-causeway bridge has a direct connectivity with Varachha and Katargam.”
Executive engineer of Surat Municipal Corporation’s bridge cell, Akshay Pandya said, “This was first time that the bridge remained shut for a long period. During the period, traffic was diverted from the two river bridges including Gilani Bridge and Nehru Bridge. However, there were issues of traffic jams at Ved Darwaja and Mughalsaria.”
