It makes a great impact when viewed from Princes Wharf.

Hopefully to be complemented on the eastern side by Pacifica very soon.

Driving over the Bridge on Saturday night, I was struck by just how much bigger the city looks at night now - the area that is lit up with multi-storey buildings has grown massively - you notice it more at night time I think.

Along with the 180m Commercial Bay building, by 2022/23 the Auckland skyline will look dramatically different with the 187m Seascape, the 178m Pacifica, the 160m + 51 Albert St, the 135m Even Hotel, and hopefully the 180m 65 Federal St. The 209m NDG building is still possible.

It's not just the height though, the extents of the city have grown massively.

COMMERCIAL BAY, PWC TOWER & RETAIL DEVELOPMENT | 180m | 39fl | Under Construction

Greenfield development completely eclipses the handful of high rises under construction and/or speculation.

Millwater, Silverdale, Albany, Hobsonville, Whenuapai, Huapai, Flat Bush, Manukau Heights, Totara Heights, Greenhithe, Karaka, Takanini, Beachlands, Pokeno, Swanson, Long Bay, Drury, Paerata etc. I'm sure I've missed some.

There is so much going on in the outskirts of Auckland, considerably more than the isthmus. Waay more out than the little bit of up in the CBD and surrounds.

I thought that's what Goats was referring to but they probably meant city fringe.

This is the problem we have:

ALL 'tall' buildings are going up in the city centre.

Very little (% wise) is medium density infill, even that is mostly 6-10 story apartments on arterials, with few nice townhouses in places that make sense (near town centres, train stations etc)

Everything else is peripheral/Greenfield development.

We still only seem to think of "CBD = tall, everything else is a house with a yard". It's changing a little, but not nearly enough.

I wasn't even thinking about the urban sprawl (which I detest), but I was commenting on how much bigger the CBD looks now compared to only a decade ago, or even 5 years ago. This is particularly apparent at night when it is all lit up - I think it looks great

Is it just me or does Commercial Bay 'reveal' something to the Herald every 2nd day?

Certainly get plenty of free advertising - not that they really need it.
