And Changi is "only" 20km from downtown?

well.....if Singapore had the chance, technology & money at that time....it would have built the airport in the sea! (like Kansai Intl Airport). No point building an airport so near to the city when other developments could be sprouting near it in the years to come........I really applaud Msian govt foresight in relocating the airport to Sepang.......it might not be as convenient as Subang but it is definitely good for the next hundred years to come ( yes....it is a hundred years planning........with the airport reserved land the largest in the world! ..........we learned from mistake )

Dude....the remaining "sea" that we have left are all used for the ship anchorages! Yeah, if land is limited, the sea is limited as well! You might be interested to know that there have been countless proposals to build floating facilities, not just airports, but all the is simply impossible because you either get in the way of the anchorage, or you intrude into international shipping lanes!

The decision (made in the 70s) to locate the airport at Changi was a sound one. There would be room for future expansion, which is being carried out via reclamation works going on now. And that includes possibilities for T4 and T5

Does anyone have an updated picture of the map of Singapore? I believe the shape of the island off the eastern coast has changed again.

Here are a few aerial shots....too bad no updates of the land profile as of today yet.

Taken 2001 Shows the existing airport, with the reclaimed land for expansion at the bottom left. (with my annotations)

Taken 2002 The northern tip of the new runway can be seen.

Taken 2002 The new runway can be clearly seen, with taxiways to be built next.

From the photos, it is amazing that the goverment has yet to make a public announcement that the runsways are already being built!

omigod. isnt changi airport a little space-inefficient? couldnt they have it denser or something... that seems a huge space for such a tiny country... an airport that occupies a tenth of a country sounds ridiculous...

and are you sure that's exactly where i live? i think it's alittle too far from the paya lebar airbase... you know when i sit in the master toilet shitting with the door open i can see planes taking off? i found that reallly nice. its like being let into a secret. like keeping watch from a secret place.

Amazing aerials!!!!!!!
Theyre a little disorientating but it looks HUGE! Both the current airport and the size of the land reclaimed. Amazing!!

I also find that the shape of the eastern coast is gonna look so cool and futuristic! Like Singapolis of the 21st Century!

PS: I just wanna laugh when I see all our locations pinpointed. Like a game of sorts

agree... they can easily fit two medium sized HDB estates into the current Changi airport and house 500,000 more people...

Nice work there huaiwei, interesting to see the location of local fourmers are kindoff equally spaced out but i don't understand why there aren't any of us living in the west

Hmm...we should still be using the existing two runways. The other two extra are for the future when Terminals 4 and 5 are built, but apprantly they decided to do it up first just in case the planes ask for more space faster then the humans!

On the height limit issue...

Quote:
Skyline (height of tallest)
1. Hong Kong (415m)
2. New York (381m)
3. Sydney (243m)
4. Shanghai (421m)
5. Singapore (280m)
6. Chicago (442m)
7. Melbourne (251m)
8. Seattle (295m)
9. Minneapolis (237m)
10. Frankfurt (259m)
It's true that people prefer skylines with supertalls but it's also true the people find well arranged skylines much more aesthetically pleasing as well.. I guess a tradeoff is the best option as Singapore will definately not be able to build a WTB because of the nearby Paya Lebar airport. I think a super tall (1000ft+) building is still feasible but the new downtown plans have proven me wrong... Oh well, I guess we will just have to be satisfied with our 3 talls and hope that the rules will be relaxed when the economy picks up again.

Refer to this pic:

"At heights of up to 245m..."

Wah....I suppose we should be demanding all the airports be closed and lets just have aircraft carriers instead!
