One day Iíd love to see a showroom apartment that resembles the reality of how people actually live in these kind of flats.

I'm not even sure what this means.

^ UMMMM...you said 'flat', they're apartments...only people who have no choice of 'apartment' live in flats.

Well, where are the wardrobes of clothes, kitchen appliances, books/DVDs, general stuff, shoe rack, bags, jackets, even space to dry clothes... I know itís all meant to be perfect decluttered living but nobody actually lives like that in reality. Like anyone has plates laid out like that or a bed made up like that every day!

To be fair, houses have always been misrepresented in show homes. Always pasta in the kitchen, the living room didn't, as a rule, have a TV in the days when TVs were big bulky boxes and bedrooms ultra neat with slightly smaller than average sized beds to make the room look bigger.

My wife makes up a bed like that every day. It drives me nuts as I have to throw off about 50 cushions every time I want to go to bed.

Funny you mention that, here in San Francisco, I recently passed by a new residential development, aimed presumably at the young tech crowd. It touted itself as 'Modern Flats'. As though the term carried more cache than the more common 'apartments'.

Of all the sticks to beat premium high rise living in 21st century London, this probably shouldn't be one of them.

Brochures, newspapers, ads and promotional material have always had immaculate showhomes featured. It's just advertising; I don't think you can blame them for not having realistic representations of how people actually live.

When you personalise a property (with clothes, photos, books, etc) it becomes much more difficult for people to visualise how it would look with their own personal effects in it. It is, therefore, far easier to sell a clean space with only a few bits of furniture there that indicate what you might be able to do with the space. And in most of these flats.......apartments (I am now confused).....there is actually very little you can do with the space.

And hardly any storage space! no wonder the 'self storage' industry is on the rise...

That is a very good point. Some of the modern flats have almost null storage. I know we all suppose to live "digital and decluttered lives" but everything has its limits.

I moved recently to a flat build in the 60s and I'm amazed by the amount of storage space comparing to some other places I have lived in. There is more storage than living space in a studio flat where I have lived a few years ago

You only have to travel past the new Battersea Power station apartments and see how people are using their winter gardens as storage cupboards!

Yes, I noticed it the other day, some "balconies" (or whatever it suppose to be) were full of junk perfectly displayed behind the glass.

I recently did a tour of a bunch of apartments in the Stratford Lofts (Manhattan Loft Gardens), I was pleasantly shocked how much storage a lot of the flats had.

Same here. My bedroom and living room are actually can be mistaken for show home sometimes.
