Ive warmed up to this tower a bit, although it has some very dissapointing aspects. I thought that this was a residential tower at first and despised it as another 432. The top is awkward but with some refinement it could really be a unique highlight. The base will be an engineering marvel to behold. The facade, though, is terribly dissapointing. Another white and black grid.

I really hope they do something to improve the proposed facade. Ideally not this banal grid, but if they must go with that then substituting the blank white outline with a brushed metal coating would be great. It would be fairly significantly more expensive, but this is already a multibillion dollar proposal so they ought to treat the facade better. I dont have a problem with minimalism, but it could and should have a greater sense of elegant refinement.

This is like some kind of Monkey's Paw story. New York gets a new tallest-to-roof-height office building... but it's this thing

That render is beaut though!

You still have to remind yourself that 270 and 350 Park Avenue are missing in this render. Add both and this tower will look more like A part of the skyline rather than THE part of the skyline. I claim that both will reduce Tower Fifths impact by a lot.

Still looks terrible. I hope they change the design.

There is a simple way to make it look better: Just use the same design, but cylindric instead of boxy. It cantilevers above its surroundings anyway. So a cylindric shape should not be a problem. Even those offset floors at the top would look better with a circular floor plate. Of course the tower would not have any corner offices then. They might be reason for many boxy designs.

Personally I'd prefer the most skyscrapercity-friendly option: Build a bunch of other supertalls around it.

Cut the height by a third and it would be a nice eclectic filler. This way it just ruins the skyline.

I wish it could switch heights with Tower Verre.

That's the only way to save the look of the skyline if it's built. Hide it with better 'supertalls'.

Seriously though, I've tried to warm up to it. Still abysmal.

Dubai just unveiled a beautiful twisting tower proposal. But in NY we get another brutalist boxy tower.. how inspiring

So many terrible developers in NYC who don't know a thing about design.

cleaned up a bit. Please remember to be civil towards others' opinions and try not to bring politics into the discussion unless it's relevant. Thanks.

You know it's bad when folks start wanting spires to make it look better.

Harry Macklowe just got $192M closer to building his Midtown skyscraper

Quote:
The octogenarian’s company Macklowe Properties landed a roughly $192 million refinancing from Fortress Investment Group for three parcels at 17 East 47th Street, 5 East 51st Street and 12 East 52nd Street, according to property records. The 51st Street and 52nd Street parcels are part of the assemblage Macklowe has been putting together for an office building dubbed “Tower Fifth” that would stand about 1,500 feet tall, span 1 million square feet and likely cost more than $1 billion.

The refinancing includes a new mortgage for about $50 million and replaces a prior $124 million loan, also from Fortress.

The design is hideous. Yes, it will ruin the skyline. We should start a petition for a redesign!
