It's not the padding or lack of it that bothers me about those seats, it's the uprightness. When you are sitting in a seat for a couple of hours you don't want it to be a 90 degree angle! The leg room is fantastic so it's not like there wouldn't have been space to have a bit more of a passenger-friendly angle

An article alluded to the LNER Azuma's, at some point having the diesel engines removed for batteries. I'll try and dig up the article.

Although rather truncated in the 1960s, the Isle of Wight still has one railway in constant use - from Ryde Pier to Shanklin (it used to go onto Ventnor). It was electrified in the 1960s, and the rolling stock solution chosen was to use obsolete 1920s electric Underground trains.

When these were worn out in the late 1980s, the solution chosen was to use obsolete 1930s electric Underground trains!

Now those 1938 design trains are on their last legs, a difficult choice has had to be made.... can you guess what has been chosen?

Not really a London-only issue, plans for Dudding Hill Line platforms at the proposed Brent Cross Thameslink station on the MML have been published.

(The station would be at the very top of the image above.)

There is now acceptance that platforms have to be extendable to 8 cars, which only happened after a local campaign.


So which do you want, A or B? And why?








It took Capita £50,000 to get to this point. They are now being given another £50,000 to decide between A and B.


The mayor wants to run 4-car London Overground trains, the 'West London Orbital', north to Hendon Thameslink. That is with or without electrification of the Dudding Hill Line.

Longer-distance, physically-longer trains would carry on, across the existing flyover (and the Northern Line) and join the MML slow lines, as below:

I think I would go with local opinion: for the single island platform, option A.

It fits in closer to the main station.
It requires one fewer lift.
It requires no land purchase.
And with passengers waiting for both directions, it would nominally have better security at night.

Maybe they could squeeze a little extra width for the platform in the middle though.

I'm actually going to miss the old stock, it's like a really cheap rollercoaster ride at the moment, but they are definitely falling to bits and the Island Line is surprisingly well patronised (it's as busy as some Merseyrail Branches, and that's a busy system getting brand new stock).

I'd love to see a cost-benefit analysis for extending back to Ventnor too, as this is something local MP's have been investigating for a while, and would bring Ventnor back into the Portsmouth commuter belt (and increasingly, beyond common sense, London!!).

Shame the route into Newport is long built over. It wouldn't take too much demolition to restore it to the edge of the town centre, but it wouldn't be close enough to be appealing and would never be cost effective.

Yes, right now there is no restriction. It's all GWR, and it seems to be priced based on people taking the fast services: A single to Paddington is £25 vs £15 from Twyford, the next station in

There are going to be more trains non-stopping Reading in the new timetable, which will probably catch a few people out on the way home

Hasn't the tunnel got a water main through it or something similar, which adds £ouch to the reopening cost?

Approach to Ryde tunnel:

Is there anywhere else in the UK where there is open-air track that is below sea level?

Do kids as tourists still get told:
  • Needles you cannot thread
  • Cowes you cannot milk
  • Brook you can walk without getting your feet wet
  • Newport you cannot bottle
  • Freshwater you cannot drink

Er, that's it. And I can understand why the answer is no.


Brent Cross station:

I was rather hoping someone would post something profound and useful about the Capita designs for that station, given how much trouble it was to get hold of the images. Still feel free.

The line into Newport has not been built over only, the stretch in Newport itself, the line to Haven St From Newport closing and lifted in 1971 after the IWSR stock was moved via the western end ot the line to their current base

the route of the line from the current Wotton station to Newport Marina on the northern outskirts of the town is still clear thogh a little overgrown from the filled in Wotton Bridge through the original station and on to Whippingham . and could reasonable be returned to rail with a station on the Northern outskirts of Newport . the biggest problem is one that plagued to route through out its life and that is land slips inm the clay soiled cutting between Wotton and Whippingham which would need stabilising.

Dawlish?

The approaches to the Severn Tunnel almost certainly are, probably bits in Liverpool too... The ECML crossing Holme Fen must be pretty close though

Erm.. no, not really, there's not much to say about it, it will be dull and value-engineered to within an inch of it's life, if it even ever gets built

Back to the future then .... 22 minutes was the standard Inter City 125 timing from 1977 or 1978 and it wasn't unusual for them to arrive in Reading almost a minute early.

Although I have read elsewhere this was due in no small part to a liberal attitude to the speed limits. And it helped that there weren't double-figure numbers of departures an hour on the main lines

LNER confirms dates for Azuma introduction onto Highland services

On Brent Cross station, my view is that a big opportunity is being missed to take any new line through the redevelopment land to a terminus near the Northern Line Brent Cross station. Such an approach could get a station much closer to the shopping centre.

An alternative cheaper option would be a simple chord to reach Colindale. Or a chord to reach Edgeware via the abandoned Northern Heights route.

In each case, the goal is to link in the Northern Line, which greatly broadens the connectivity in the area, and should boost the business case for the link new orbital.

Someone on here suggesting terminating the West London Orbital at a new station by Colindeep Lane, with new platforms on the Northern line. Which seems the easiest option, if interchange with the Northern line is worth having

These new trains are great. Flexible power plant options and reusing a shell built for people (hopefully seats too), it is a modern train in every way except the shell. Wish they would introduce them on my local line.

Funding confirmed for key local road upgrades

Government has allocated over £100M of funding to allow 18 new local authority road schemes across England to move to their next stage of development.

This marks the first wave of funding to be announced for the Department for Transport’s major road network and large local majors programme. The bulk of the money is going to four schemes which now have the go ahead to proceed to construction.




Largest of these is Lancashire County Council’s Preston Western Distributor scheme; a new dual carriageway link designed to reduce congestion in the city and unlock access to employment and residential development sites. The project has received £31M from the Government.

Lancashire County Council leader Geoff Driver said: “This is a major new road scheme that will significantly improve access around the city, as well as creating a new connection onto the national motorway network.

“We’re delighted that the Government has confirmed the final funding that we need to deliver these roads. We can now commence the construction work very soon.”

Meanwhile £25.5M has been given to the 3.5km Stubbington Bypass in Hampshire, with £22.9M going to the Wichelstowe southern access scheme and £22.5M to the White Hart junction scheme, both near Swindon.

Further projects to benefit from the £100M (listed below) include seven at strategic outline business case stage – which have been given development funding – and a further seven at an earlier stage of development.

The Department for Transport said road users will benefit from faster commutes and improved journeys thanks to the 18 schemes, which will also support wider economies through job creation and provide opportunities for greener forms of travel through dedicated routes for walking and cycling.

Further funding allocations are expected to be announced in the next few months.

The funding comes after Chancellor Sajid Javid spoke of the importance of roads investment at the Conservative Party Conference. He said work will soon begin on strategic network upgrades including the A428 between Cambridge and Milton Keynes (pictured), the M60 at Simster Island near Manchester and the A66 across the Pennines.

Schemes at strategic outline business case stage which have been awarded development funding are:
  • Tyne Bridge and central motorway renewal
  • A38 Bromsgrove route enhancement programme
  • A511 growth corridor, Leicestershire
  • A38 – Bristol Airport access improvement
  • A38 Manadon interchange (Plymouth)
  • A374/A386/A3064 Plymouth phase 1
  • A140 Long Stratton bypass

Earlier stage projects given funding for development are:
  • A1079 improvement, East Riding of Yorkshire
  • Isham bypass, Northamptonshire
  • A28 Birchington, Acol and Westgate-on-Sea relief road
  • Southampton West Quay road realignment
  • A146 Barnby bends
  • Lombard roundabout, Croydon
  • A13 Lodge Lane, Dagenham
