Tampere holds tram industry day
07 Nov 2014

FINLAND: The city of Tampere is holding a Tramway Industry Day on November 17 to inform potential suppliers about a planned two-route standard gauge tram network. The city expects to decide on the procurement model by the end of 2014, with contractors selected next year.

Tampere has a population of 220 000, with 353 000 in the wider urban area. By 2040 this is forecast to grow to 280 000 and 460 000, respectively. The tram network is projected to carry 47 700 passengers per weekday. The route would serve four university campuses with a combined student population of 40 000.

Work on the first section from Hervanta to the city centre could start in 2016, with opening in 2018-19. This would also include a depot in Hervanta, as well as an automatic tram control and information system

The map shows wrong route for the second phase. In earlier planning phases, might have been already back in 2011, second phase route was lined next to Paasikiventie and not through Pispala. How the route will be lined from Paasikiventie to Lielahti is still open and waiting the planning of Hiedanranta district east of Lielahti.

Following link shows the routes of first and second phase in black and future expansion directions in blue.

So phase 1 is a short line in the city center and two branches on the same side of the city? and planned phases will create one extension on the other side of the city while also creating a third line on the eastern side?
i.e. creating a network that has one line on the western side and three on the eastern side? This strikes me as odd and unbalanced. I guess the city & suburbs must be that "unbalanced" already and the trams will just go where the people are?

Basically yes. Tampere is a bit unbalanced. By the year 2025, when phases 1 and 2 are complete and operational, about 45 % of residents will live within 800 metres from closest tramstop.

But, depending on Hiedanranta district, 70 - 75 % of new housing construction from 2016 to 2040 will be within 800 metres from tramline, both phases 1 and 2 and future expansions. This means that by 2040, 61 % of residents will be living within 800 metres from closest tramstop.

I wish they would build tram for Vantaa too. Not that I'm not sure that this Project will be painfully long and expensive. In Finland it can't go any other way.

One thing that struck me when looking at Tampere in google maps is that you could do a ringline around Villilänsalmi as a phase 3. Connect to Nokia and suburbs south of the lake. Plus maybe build new districts right along the lake, turn it into a city-lake
