An Overview of Holistic Realm: International Architecture Exhibition at the 2011 Chengdu Biennale
by Sue Wang on Oct 14, 2011 • 10:31 am

Quote:

Through the staging of its contemporary displays, the 2011 Chengdu Biennale highlights Chengdu’s efforts to transform itself into a “Modern International Garden City”. The overarching leitmotif of the garden city indicates two interrelated aspects: one material, the other spiritual. The Englishman Ebenezer Howard (1850-1920) expressed the following desire in his Garden Cities of Tomorrow: “Shall we be able to build up a society with art and culture for all, and with some great spiritual aim dominating people’s lives?”

A “garden city” was not simply an urban form, but the embodiment of a desire that this ideal city would be controlled by the spirit. This is in complete accord with the ancient Chinese philosophy based on harmony between heaven and man. In the chapter of The Literary Mind and the Carving of Dragons titled “Material colouring” (wù sè), Liu Xie wrote of the artist “turning”, flowing”, and “mentally hovering” within the changes of matter and of vistas, and this expressed his creative view of the complementarity of matter and spirit. “Garden cities” insist that we observe not only the spatiotemporal changes a city undergoes but that we also see how within concepts, as within material objects, clear distinctions exist, and these can provide ideas with material forms so that what exists without occupying space serves at the same time to explain space. Moreover, these two forms of space have interactive elements that suffuse within a specific duration, such as Bergson indicated. In post-modern cultural theory, the unseen layered changes of duration are more surprising than any of the surface changes that can be observed.

Please use GeoHive.com and not Wikipedia for population comparisons...

London according to Eurostat is 12 million.
Chicagoland is now pretty exactly 10 million.
Chengdu sub-provincial city (largest in acerage of all here) is 14 million.
New York metro area is 22 million.

However, give Chengdu 10 more years, and urban sprawl has made the countryside look more like a city. Right now it is just alot of people still in lots of villages, and not as built up as London, Chicago or New York... It is up and comming, but large in population...

However, Hot Rod might rather want to compare cities according to urbanized land... In which case I think I read once a few years ago that New York is still ahead of Tokyo. Although just barely.

Wow .. GeoHive.com is very useful . Thanks

There is no doubt that Chengdu urban area less than New York, Los Angeles or Beijing . But should be same Chicago. (Not rural, not villages, totaly urbanized land) I just don't agree with Hotrod that Chengdu is a mid-sized city . Chengdu is a very famous big city in China . New york is not juat a big city , it is a super size city .

Under normal circumstances, tourists's activity limited in the central city of Chengdu and Shuangliu airport , I can understand why they ignoring the suburbs.
Because the aviation restrictions, Chengdu and Beijing has a similar height restrictions, so you can see the building is not very high .

Chengdu Shuangliu International Airport is 5th busiest in mainland China(2011) and the 47st in the world.(2010) But it is too closed to center of Chengdu .

Data of 2010:
In 2010 Shuangliu Airport handled 25,805,815 passengers to rank the 6th busiest in mainland China and the 47st in the world.(2011 is 5th ) It was also the 6th busiest airport in terms of cargo traffic and the 6th busiest by traffic movements in China for 2009.

About the city's pictures , there are all old photos , taking by 5-10 years ago .
And Gentlemen , please don't unreasonable to treat a girl .

Every big city has themselfs 'luxury' store in every country. Either American or Norway luxury store are set for vanity people .There are not any difference with Chinese city and another city . They are all suitable for your opinion.

Now most of highest levels of 'luxury' brands are from French , Italy and Japan... But many of they are made in China . USA is very weakness in this place ,don't tell me USA have Anna sui - a Chinese Amerian brand and few cheaper second lines brands like Polo Ralph Lauren , Calvin Klein . And I don't know any 'luxury' brand is from North Europe , I feel they don't care it . And there are Chinese who like it or who don't like it . It is their own business.

For a long time , Chinese Precious porcelain and Precious beautiful selk is a popular real luxury in Europe. This is good exchange and communication history between China and Europe .Does any USA 'luxury' brand popular in Europe ?

And I don't like who call themself from "Western" . In the ancient times , Chinese people call Hungary, India and Persian Western . For Chinese they are all from Western . And second , USA is locaded in FarEast of China , not west .

Most important thing is , Chinese is enough confident to accept foreign" luxury " .that is my first time hear this interesting perspective . Of course China need selves morden luxury brand , but this is not most important .
All based on China have a great history and own great culture system in all aspects . They respect European culture . When they buy some european " luxury "and japanese " luxury ", they really don't care about it is foreigns .

Maybe some rich chinese need buy some " luxury "to show how them rich because he was poor , but about "foreign" part , Chinese really don't care .

very true, and you can see the Chang Jiang (and bridge) in shot 3 - which is clearly Chongqing.

perhaps a simple mistake of identity of the building, but Im Not sure what is with some of the Chengdu posters, do they want to claim 'everything' as Chengdu in order to prop it up?? ......

After I check Chicago's photo , I feel Chicago is more smaller , sorry . And it is all short flat house except the downtown .

And about you said :
I am very well aware that Chongqing was part of Sichuan and but you failed to mention why it lobbied successfully to form its own municipality, and succeeded. It is obvious things were not working under Chengdu's provincial control - ie, look at the city now as opposed to pre-1997. Im sure if given the chance Mianyang, Neijiang, Suining, etc might love to leave as well. ...

You are so funny ! Are there anything about you ?

Tell me which American city are you live ? I also need to criticism and evaluation one of your city . And both Chongqing and Chengdu developing fast and goverment do hard working . Can you explain me one of your Chongqing and your Chengdu ? I'm wait here .

I'm very welcome you find a new photo of Chicago , and let's compare the "visual feel". (Because you doubt any data )

I do not know why you pretend like Chongqing and pretending to hate Chengdu .If you are not Chinese, you stand on a very strange perspective . Are you Chinese ?

This is two different styles of the city. They are all southwestern star city. This photo is wrong and old, so I let you go look at my posts, Im ensure no errors and old photos there .

Sports in Chengdu

It is easy to find ski resort in Sichuan and Chengdu . Some ski resorts attract other provinces and Southeast Asia , Europe and American tourists. Here is an incomplete list of ski resort in Sichuan and Chengdu :

Sichuan Chengdu Xiling ski resort 四川成都西岭滑雪场
Sichuan Chengdu Longchi ski resort 四川成都龙池滑雪场
Sichuan Chengdu Wawushan ski resort 四川成都瓦屋山滑雪场
Sichuan Chengdu Emeishan ski resort 四川成都峨眉山滑雪场
Sichuan Chengdu Bipenggou ski resort 四川成都毕鹏沟滑雪场

Sichuan Labahe ski resort 四川喇叭河滑雪场

Etc .

Have to mention the Tennis in Sichuan . Tennis is becoming more popular in Chengdu , they are middle class and the general public welcome .
In 2006 , Zhengjie and Yanzi combination won the Australian Open doubles champion and Wimbledon doubles champion (Large full crown). that 2 girls both from Sichuan province, they are proud of China .

The Chengdu Open was held for the first time on the ATP Champions Tour in 2009, and the event marked the Tour’s first visit to China. In its maiden year the tournament boasted a scintillating line-up that included Bjorn Borg and John McEnroe as well as the 2001 WImbledon Champion Goran Ivanisevic and Chinese-American hero Michael Chang.

The event didn’t disappoint, either for the players or the fans. Thousands of locals flocked to see the latest installment of the McEnroe-Borg rivalry, won on this occasion by the Swede, and to see Thomas Enqvist lift his third ATP Champions Tour title of the year on finals day. The players had the opportunity to pay a visit to a nearby Giant Panda sanctuary, seizing a unique chance to see the beautiful and endangered species close up. In 2010, Pete Sampras arrived for the first time to China. After a fantastic week the American was beaten by Greg Rusedski in the final.

The city of Chengdu is a perfect location for the event. Situated in the Sichuan Province in the South West of China, on the edge of the Sichuan Basin, it is one of the most important hubs of communications, economics and transportation in the whole of China.

Last month Pate Sampras in Chengdu . US famous Pate Sampras !!!!

Chengdu need a clustered skyscraper shaped like pyramid, like the Chicago below. It look good.

I wonder, if there any CBD plan and supertalls in Chengdu?

I read many about Shenzhen, Guangzhou, CQ, etc, but so far no Chengdu.

I totaly don't agree with HOTROD that he said Chengdu is a medium-sized city .

And I doubt his interesting story very much , because I do not see any evidence.

He said that he with his wife live in a "highest"condo in Chengdu .(What is surprising that he said he bought that condo ,he will speak Chinese?)He "have been to Chengdu in one season" in first time and " he has many times experience" in second time (Inconsistent) , the nearest just last year . And particular reference to he have been to Shuangliu county (Suburb) .

The fact might be , 5 or more years ago he with his partner (or alone ) have a main trip in Chongqing . Because Chengdu is not far from the Chongqing , so they deisded come to Chengdu for a short trip(Few days) . And he was walking around the center of city (Around the Jinjiang District ) and live in a apartment hotel in 10th floor. Unfortunately,in that few days the weather was very bad . In the end of the travel , they when to Shuangliu airport and take airplane .(Come on , each tourist should be take airplane at Shuangliu airport)

As urban area and metropolitan area population , Chengdu is totaly a very very big city . Chengdu also is traditional Chinese megacity with history of thousands years.

I don't understand why some people always comparing Chengdu with Chongqing. Chengdu and Chongqing is a completely different type of city , specially geographical structure . Chengdu's old city area has a lot of old 70's and 80's , 6 to 7 layers of apartments . land is expensive, difficult to remove them.

Chengdu is not a city like Chicago or Chongqing, Shanghai, Shenzhen and Guangzhou as the skyscraper city.

In China, Beijing and Chengdu aviation height limit, similar to Washington that I said before . Chengdu has not a supertall and supertall plan , not similar with Chicago or Shenzhen . Now , the highest building in Chengdu just 200 meters and a little more.

About CBD, Chengdu has a huge number of high buildings. Chengdu's downtown is very large, multi-zone center, very similar to Tokyo's plan or Paris , high buildings everywhere. So you can't say that Chengdu CBD , there are many CBDs with buildings which less than 200M .
