Connaught & Barnfield estates

Demolition progresses rapidly at the Connaught estate while - as noted above - piling has started on the northwestern corner.

At the Barnfield estate renovations continue. The 1930s red and yellow brick (seen here) is rapidly disappearing under a layer of white and pink plaster. It looks cheerful now but whether in the long run this proves to be a good idea...?

Some really nice developments going up in Woolwich - it's refreshing.

That final paint job is worrying - it looks pretty shocking already let alone in a few years time.

Similar paint schemes are common all over other European countries. That painted render is common in Germany, Netherlands, Poland etc. No problems there with it continuing to look ok. But then again this is in Woolwich - the local council are pretty hopeless with maintenance of their housing stock and public realm.

Brilliant to see the Barnfield Estate reinvented as renovated Soviet pre-fab style - looks like something out of Poland. The trouble with brick is it does not show dirt, moss or grime as well as white plaster.

You also took one picture that shows the progress the builders are making at the northern end of the site while the demolition is still going on in the background. Hope you don't mind me linking to that here.

Very little left of the Connaught estate. A big crane has arrived and building seems to be in full swing.

Great view! Looks like you're on the top floor of Woolwich Central.

The Connaught Estate is no more. The last remnants have been turned into heaps of rubble. Construction is well underway.

Trinity Walk

The Connaught Estate is gone, including the name. It's now called Trinity Walk and it's going up rather fast. As was reported in another thread, the Woolwich Baptist Central Church is now likely to be replaced by a building with residences above a new church hall. See also this blog.

Trinity Walk from Woolwich New Road. Glad they kept the old brick wall from the barracks that once stood here.

The sale of 1 and 2-bedroom apartments on the lower floors of Viotti Heights has started, ranging between £310,000 and £425,000. It's the northernmost 10-storey block on the corner of Sandy Hill Lane and Brumwell Avenue, the axis road in the development. I just wish the architecture was a little more exciting (judging from the brochure). Well, let's wait and see.

On the first two photos Viotti Heights can be seen from Sandy Hill Road. The third photograph shows (left to right): Hobbs Court, Knowles Court, Theobald Heights and Viotti Heights (see brochure map). No idea what these names represent. Painters, musicians? No link with the military history of the area, as far as I can tell. The next photo is taken from Brookhill Road with terraced houses under construction in the foreground. The last picture is of the Lovell marketing suit which popped up about a month ago.
