Giant crane goes up in South Shields as regeneration scheme kicks off

This from Chronicle Live website 02/08/15

The crane, near Ferry Street in South Shields,, will remain on site for the construction of a new three-storey community hub

www.craiglengphotography.co.uk

EXTRACTS

A huge crane has been installed in a North East town to help kick off work on a regeneration project.

The structure will remain at the site in South Shields while a new three-storey building is constructed over the next six to eight months.

The Word, the North East Centre for the Written Word, will include a library and interactive exhibition space. The facility will aim to provide a home not only for the North East’s writing talent, but to become a hub for community and cultural activity for the people of South Tyneside.

The crane was put up on Saturday and testing activities were carried out on Sunday.

AND

John Osborne, senior project manager at Bowmer & Kirkland, said: “We’d like to thank everyone for their patience during the delivery of the construction works.

“The erection of the tower crane is a key milestone in our delivery programme and we appreciate the co-operation of the council and the local community to date. We will continue to work hard in order to minimise the impact of our construction works on the day to day lives of residents and businesses surrounding the project.”

The Word is on the street as South Shields’ new library begins to take shape

From today's Shields Gazette @ http://www.shieldsgazette.com/what-s...hape-1-7457410
The Word is on the street as South Shields’ new library begins to take shape
12 September 2015

A futuristic building at the heart of a £100m masterplan for the transformation of South Shields Town Centre is fast becoming a reality.

The distinctive circular shape of The Word (the North East Centre for the Written Word), a new town library and digital hub, is now clearly recognisable as work continues apace on the three-storey building in Ferry Street.

The building has always been seen as the focal point for ‘South Shields 365’, a decade-long vision to transform the town with future plans also including a new cinema and restaurants in Chapter Row and Barrington Street, a transport interchange on the site of the town’s existing post office and sorting office and a new retail quarter at the rear of Fowler Street. The work is also being carried out alongside the ongoing modernisation of the nearby Market Place, which is being covered by a canopy to protect traders and shoppers from inclement weather.

Construction of The Word, which started in April, is currently bang on schedule, with a completion date inked in for autumn next year.

At that point the building will house a library and interactive exhibition space, and provide a home for local writing talent. In addition there will be a range of other facilities, including exhibition space, computer gaming area, design and innovation studio with 3D printers, digitised archives, meeting rooms, children’s storytelling area, OpenZone IT suite, cafe and a rooftop restaurant and terrace – providing stunning views over the river.

Councillor John Anglin, the council’s lead member for Regeneration and Economy, said the building was “coming to life before our eyes. He said: “It’s great news that this important regeneration project which we believe will boost the economic prosperity of the town centre is progressing so well and is on track to be completed next autumn. It is really exciting to see the building take shape and come to life before our eyes.”

I heard a couple of months ago from a fairly reliable source at a North East university that the centre will feature a FabLab--I suppose this is what the "innovation studio" referred to above means. The article refers only to 3D printers but I would expect a range of other equipment.

I'd be quite excited about this if I lived in South Shields.

If you're not familiar this is worth a read: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fab_lab

The Word - 12th September 2015

These photographs of The Word were taken on a grey, raining afternoon in South Shields, so not the best of quality - photographed 12th September 2015.

South Tyneside's maritime heritage to be set in stone

From today's Shields Gazette @ http://www.shieldsgazette.com/news/l...tone-1-7587922
South Tyneside's maritime heritage to be set in stone
By Tom Patterson 24th November 2015

[B]Pictured working on one of the benches is Darren Pick with Michael Chaplin and Coun John Anglin.

South Tyneside’s seafaring history is set to take pride of place in a major new public art project.

Twenty fact-based tales about the crews and cargoes of ships which visited the borough over the last 2,000 years are to go on show at the new library and digital media centre currently being built as part of the South Shields 365 regeneration project. The stories - known as Tyne Voyages - have been crafted by writer Michael Chaplin who penned the BBC hit Monarch of the Glen and also wrote a book called Tyne View which examined the heritage of the River Tyne and was the inspiration for the Tyne Voyages project.

Now the details of the ships’ cargoes and destinations are being engraved on to new stone benches which will be installed in the Market Place in South Shields. The highly skilled task is being carried out by North Shields-based engraver Classic Masonry Ltd.

Coun John Anglin said: “Tyne Voyages is a truly innovative project that draws on South Tyneside’s international links through its maritime history. These stone benches will serve as an anchor to the past while allowing people to marvel at the changing face of South Shields as our 365 plan comes to life over the coming months.”

The extracts which will go on display at The Word, the North East Centre for the Written Word, have been created following painstaking research into the ships which came into the port with cargoes of coal, tea and even guano – otherwise known as bird droppings. Among the people featured in these is solider, sailor and freedom fighter Giuseppe Garibaldi who was enthusiastically welcomed to South Tyneside in 1854. Known now as “the father of the fatherland,” Garibaldi embraced republican and democratic ideals as well as the popular movement for the unification of Italy. His visit to South Tyneside was to load coal but he stayed for a month in the North East where he spoke at open-air meetings, attracting crowds of up to 100,000 people.

Milestone reached in South Tyneside's £100m 365 regeneration project

From the Chronicle Live website on 11/01/16

EXTRACTS

Work on the structure of the North East Centre for the Written Word, in South Shields, is complete and the building opens in autumn

Developers have reached a milestone in the development of a multi-million pound South Tyneside redevelopment scheme.

On Monday South Tyneside Council’s chief executive Martin Swales joined council leader Iain Malcolm and Matt Crompton, joint managing director of the council’s development partner Muse Developments, to put the finishing touches to the North East Centre for the Written Word at a topping out ceremony.

The external structure of the building is now complete and the centre will form a cultural, and community, hub when it opens this autumn.

Features at the site will include facilities including exhibition space, computer gaming area, design and innovation studio with 3D printers, digitised archives, meeting rooms, children’s immersive storytelling area, IT suite, café and a rooftop restaurant and terrace providing stunning views over the River Tyne.

Coun Malcolm said: “It’s two years since we launched the South Shields 365 project and it’s about creating a new, vibrant, town centre.

“The Word, our new facility, will open in Autumn and it’s on budget and on time.

“We’re now moving to the next stage, we’re pressing on with what I think is a crucial transformation improving our shopping and leisure experience.”
