They should build a tower inspired by the cathedral across the street, in the Flatbush and Steinway style. That would make an amazing addition and set New York steps ahead of the rest of the world, once again creating a new style of skyscraper architecture.

I would love to see that. Macklowe is redeveloping One Wall Street, so he isn't a stranger to contextual design.

The difference is that Macklowe is constrained by Landmarks for One Wall Street.

It'd be nice if some Neo-Gothic Deco supertall could replace this awful box.

It’s been said throughout history but money doesn’t buy you class.

This building as is simple to build money grab, and a literal 360 middle finger to the rest of the city. I don’t care how tall its a blight on the majestic spires of nyc..

a nice change from all the recent slender towers, this one looks massive.

My initial reaction from the only render isn't really enthused, I would like to see more.

Midtown just doesn't stop, these projects keep popping up

Sad to see a lot of regulars act like they're new to skyscrapercity. How do you think there's a "design" when there's no architect mentioned anywhere?

Not to undermine your argument, but Metlife is quite ugly. It's become iconic, but not because of its beauty...

I'm not sure I get what you're saying.

The NYT article says: "In the hope of gaining city approval, Mr. Macklowe and his team — Dan Shannon of Moed de Armas & Shannon Architects and Gensler, a second architecture firm — shoehorned their tower onto the site in an attempt to mitigate its impact on the surroundings. They have also held preliminary meetings with the city’s Planning Department, the Landmarks Preservation Commission and with members of the local community board with the hope of quelling potential opposition."

I'm saying that I'm long overdue for an appointment with the eye doctor. I read the entire article and found no mention of any architect.

Opportunity Here - Let's Hope it is Taken

A project this huge and tall, let's all hope a stunning design is ultimately chosen. Personally, I'd like to see the world's greatest art deco skyscraper of all time built here, to this height. I envision the most spectacular, jaw-dropping art deco skyscraper to blow away everything else built prior. Out of the question? No. All it takes is a developer who decides to build just this and gives that express direction to the architectural team: pull out all the stops and do it.

Anything is probably better than the initial drawings suggest. That ungainly top with the protruding floors is simply laughable and ugly. If the developer wanted attention, well, he got it. But not in a good way. Time for the developer to get serious and build the most spectacular skyscraper New York and the world deserves. Full-blown art deco, on a 21st century scale, is the way to go

An actual vision for future architecture, grounded both in classical & natural beauty and bold visions for mankind,

I'm amazed this was drawn. Whether it's built or not doesn't even matter all that much.
The sole existance of this design is set to be revolutionary in many ways!

It's super-eclectic of course, but somehow it succeeds imho.
It's amazing really. I've shed tears. Wow.

There are tons of beautiful supertall designs in Chinese cities most people outside China have never heard of. I think New York City deserves something much better than this design.

The funny think is that many very beautiful supertalls around the world were designed by American architectural firms like SOM.

Of course it could still get worse: Macklowe could hire BIG to design the tower :-)

I think we should send some photos of beautiful supertalls to Macklowe. I do not know if he will read our emails, but it is worth a try.

New render.

The visualization studio who's working on the project mentioned Gensler as the firm behind the design.

Are they trying to mimic the Nordstrom's cantilever signature...

Interesting, I was quite sure that 488 Madison would be demolished, but apperently it will survive.
