I think, for me, it's like this; The design is not bad. Average. But for this location and height it should not be average, it should be excellent. So I hope they will redesign it.

Actually it is so bad that even Bjarke Ingles would not come up with such a bad design :-)

I love it. It doesn't taper much. Looks beautiful without too much craziness. Modern and rather simple is great.

I just want to reiterate how ugly and unimaginative this design is.

270 and 350 Park Avenue will reduce the impact this tower will have on the skyline anyway. SomI dont feel like panicking about it.

YIMBY reports some progress in terms of demolition of exisiting buildings:

https://newyorkyimby.com/2019/06/dem...town-east.html

Wondering if this initial scheme is intended as a tensile/hanging curtain wall. Looks like there's a large diagrid at the top, and no columns protruding through the large setback at the lower section. So maybe the CW is supported from above. Seems wild for such a tall tower.

They're not showing any structure for the tower top rendering. Seems a little idealistic.

I feel so sad for New York City. This eyesore will just ruin the skyline.

Some people can't stand flat roofs, others can't stand spires. Not everyone can be happy. Fortunately for Manhattan, there's a supertall with a spire currently rising a few blocks from here and there are others proposed.

There are options to build a tower with neither a flat roof nore a spire. A pyramid for example or any kind of crown. The Gherkin in London shows a good way to top out a skyscraper.

For me it's not the flat roof. It's more the overall design that is a problem. The whole thing is a mess.

NYC has plenty of those. BIG's pyramid on the West Side or more recently Turkey's consulate to the East. Both have a significant skyline presence despite not being supertalls. I could also point to Tower Verre or 30 Hudson Yards

It's not flat top OR spire, we can all pretty much agree that it's about having a variety of shapes to make a recognizable skyline.

But recently, NY has seemingly been prioritizing square flat tops which, IF this gets built + that horrid FB bullcrap that's proposed + [enter name here] etc... It could create almost a 'table-top' sort of impression and that just defies the purpose of it all I would argue. OK I'm being a little dramatic but you know what I mean... It's about having sky-SCRAPERS; not 'sky-holders'...

Damn, that's a good term actually I'm think I'm gonna copyright that one > > > skyholder©

Plans for Tower Fifth in Midtown include Venezuela consulate

Quote:
The current Venezuelan consulate on East 51st Street is supposed to be incorporated into Harry Macklowe’s proposed Tower Fifth skyscraper, and any sale seems to have escaped complications from US sanctions.

[...]

Macklowe, now sailing on his yacht in Europe, responded to a request about Venezuela and possible US government issues by e-mailing it’s “done.”

Since Macklowe has been assembling the site for years, despite a sale not yet being publicly recorded, it appears the wily developer lined up all his bricks prior to any sanctions.

[...]

Records show he is also in contract to buy 14 E. 52nd St., with that sale scheduled to close before June 30.
