448 m and only 26 floors? That's nearly 20 meters per floor! Surely, there must be a mistake somewhere? Unless they're stacking cathedrals on top of each other, there has to be more floors than that?

It's what it says on the homepage. They're going to fill them with large entertainment facilities.

So it seems it's not going to have any office space. It's going to have a shopping center at the bottom, along with an aquarium. There will be various forms of entertainment facilities on the higher floors.

I think this is supposed to be a "landmark tower" in the sense of, maybe, the Tokyo Skytree--just without the functionality of the radio tower aspect of it.

Big floors, a lot of unoccupied space, flashy--it's a visual centerpiece for Incheon's (mystifying) 2nd big greenfield development, little more. And it's on a bunch of reclaimed mudflats that ought to be a Ramsar site.

Can't say I'm a big fan of it conceptually, but it may be pretty to look at, so...we'll see.

Well, at least it'll be one of a kind skyscraper. A skyscraper amusement park. I think they're aiming for a major tourist attraction rather than office or residential space.

A recent study showed that the tower could shake or be unstable in case of heavy winds. Some redesign of the tower will be necessary, which will delay the start of construction.

448m with only 26 floor plates is like a huge single hay thread sticking out of the ground. Not only winds, even a slight error in mass distribution will endanger the whole structure. I hope they REALLY know what they are gonna do. And no, don't use bamboo as a comparison, unless a single floor plate is going to be at least 20m thick solid concrete but as light as a regular plate. And bamboo DO tend to bend the higher it grows.

Anyway, the future is exciting

Construction of the tower to begin this month

Following the delay regarding the structural integrity of the tower in case of heavy winds, and after additional reviews, construction of the tower will begin this month.

Construction of the first 200 meters or so will follow the initial plans, while for the upper half of the builing, there will be some adjustments (to be finalized) to the building to make it slightly more round and less prone to heavy winds.

The tower didn't begin construction back in February as previously planned. I mean this project's planning is more than 10 years in the making, and has been cancelled, delayed revived more than a few times.

The latest news are good though, following a scare over the last few days/weeks.

The subcontract for the construction had yet to be signed, but that was finally done today, with POSCO E&C as the contractor.

Construction is now slated to begin in early April, and with begin with the construction of an access road to the tower (which is currently an island in the middle of a lake).

I'll let you know once there are some new updates.

Apparently, "construction" has started on April 10th. But for now, construction just means the removal of obstacles/debris from the site, as was announced yesterday.

There are still some uncertainties about the design due to the wind, and also due to financing or subcontracting, so it remains to be seen if the actual construction goes smoothly.

That's a welcome sign nonetheless, but let's be cautious.

Update on the delay to the construction.

Since the end of May, the developer consortium has consulted with an American architectural/engineering firm to redesign the tower and allow it to withstand stronger wins. This redesign is expected to be completed by October. Afterwards, the developers would complete the final approval process, and actual construction is expected to begin in earnest in H1 2020.

Another article which is in line with the previous one:

The company in charge of developing the project has announced that the revised design will be finalized in September, and will then be approved in a "fast-track" system, to allow the construction to start in early 2020.

Completion is now scheduled for 2024.
