Why Moses Mabhida is SA's top ranked stadium
30 SEPTEMBER 2018, 12:00PM

DURBAN - While some stadiums that were built for the 2010 World Cup were said to be struggling to generate revenue, Durban’s Moses Mabhida Stadium has shown significant improvements over the years. The iconic stadium was voted the most popular stadium in South Africa in an online poll and it has hosted more cup finals than any other stadium that was used during the World Cup.

According to recent financial statements, Moses Mabhida has an annual turnover of R80 million.
Stadium general manager Vusi Mazibuko attributed the success to aspects he believed gave Moses Mabhida a competitive advantage against other stadiums.

...Mazibuko said the location of the stadium also made the stadium a preferred venue for many of their clients.

“People love to be in Durban - it is along the beach, with hotels and a casino,” he added.

Although the stadium is not being used as a home ground by any Durban teams playing in the Premier Soccer League, it has managed to attract Kaizer Chiefs to host at least four of their home games at the stadium.

Mazibuko added that the restaurants and lifestyle outlets inside the premises made it easier to attract clients.

...There are various events planned for December, including the #FillUpMosesMabhida organised by local *rapper Cassper Nyovest.

Lack of sponsor hobbles #FillUpMosesMabhida

Durban - The much-talked about #FillUpMosesMabhida concert by hip hop artist Cassper Nyovest is hanging in the balance after revelations that no sponsorship has been agreed to by eThekwini Municipality.

There was controversy around a reported R56million being injected by the city into the event, which is scheduled for December 1.

However, during a press briefing at the stadium, Nyovest, the Federation For Radical Economic Transformation (Ffret) and some of its affiliates - including the Amadelangokubona Business Forum - and artists said the city had not committed any money to the event at this stage.

Having heard about the supposed R56m funding for the event, Amadelangokubona Business Forum confronted the city, demanding to know how this huge amount of money could be given to one artist while local artists and events organisers never got such large amounts.

Joy Mbewana of the Ffret said: “We spoke to various senior officials including the city manager and discovered that the reports were inaccurate. We heard that there was a proposal to fund the event, but there was no commitment at this stage. We then said since no events organiser in Durban gets even R1m for an event, this amount would not be right.”

Hmmmm ...

Would hardly call it much talked about.. I've seen a few posters and thats about it really...

But a big concert at Moses would be good to hear about (not that I'd go cos Casper is not my cup of tea)... I'm somewhat concerned by the company Casper seems to keep though, Ffret and that business forum.... not really what you would call squeaky clean companions really...
