Vishwaraj Sugar plans Rs 425 crore expansion, IPO in Feb-March

Quote:
MUMBAI: Karnataka-based Vishwaraj Sugar Industries (VSL) has drawn up Rs 425 crore expansion plans for doubling its production capacity.

The company plans to hit the capital market in February- March with initial public offer (IPO) to raise up to Rs 374 crore.

The company has an integrated plant at Belgaum district with a sugarcane crushing capacity of 5,500 tonnes per day, alongwith power and spirits (molasses, ethanol and Indian Made Foreign Liquor) manufacturing facility.

"Market regulator SEBI has cleared the Draft Red Herring Prospectus and we are planning to launch our IPO in February or March," VSL Executive Director Mukesh Kumar told reporters.

"We plan to raise up to Rs 374 crore. The company will use the proceeds of the IPO for expansion, which include doubling the cane crushing capacity to 11,000 tonnes crushing per day (TCD) from the present 5,500 TCD," Kumar said, adding that production from the expanded capacity is likely to commence in the 2014-15 sugar season.

The total expansion cost of the project is pegged at Rs 425 crore, for which the company is also raising Rs 70 crore of long-term debt from the Bank of India.

Karnataka has taken a lead in sugar production in the country recording a 17 per cent jump by December 2012 as against national growth of 2.5 per cent achieved by the industry.

The sugar production till end-December 2012 in UP recorded a fall of about 11 per cent and in Maharashtra it was about 4 per cent higher compared to the production during the same period last year, sugar production status report released by the Indian Sugar Mills Association said.

"Sugarcane cultivation is good in Karnataka and as against earlier fear of drought affecting cane and resultant sugar production has been removed with the state producing 1,550 lakh tonnes, recording a 17 per cent growth till end-December 2012," Kumar said.

VSL has association with farmers of 49 villages for assured supply of sugarcane. The company would also expand the distillery capacity to 1 lakh litre per day from the current 35,000 litres per day, which would lead to doubling of IMFL production capacity to 5,000 cases a day from the present 2,500 cases a day," Kumar added.

The company would also utilise part of IPO proceeds to expand its power co-generation capacity to 66 MW from current 36 MW. VSL has signed a power purchase agreement with Tata Power Trading Company to sell 23 MW from its proposed expansion of co-generation capacity.

At present, the company sells 14 MW to Tata PowerBSE 0.23 % and 7 MW to Hubli Electricity Supply Company under a long-term PPA.

Vishwaraj Sugar has posted a turnover of Rs 425 crore in the nine months period ended December 2012. It has registered a net profit of Rs 52 crore over a turnover of Rs 425.81 crore during 2011-12 fiscal. "Revenues will be doubled after expansion and will be reflected in FY14," he said.

Belgaum Foundry Cluster: Productivity of firms increases by 60%

Quote:
ET Bureau Feb 24, 2012, 05.44PM IST

BELGAUM: The Belgaum Foundry Cluster (BFC) set-up a year and a half back has brought profit for small and medium enterprises ( SMEs) involved in supplying casting to automobile, textile and general engineering companies. They have seen handsome growth within a year by using the facilities extended at BFC, which has emerged as model cluster in India and expect a further increase in their profits.

According to BFC records, with its establishment, production of casting in Belgaum has increased by 60 percent - from 1 lakh tonne to 1.6 lakh tonne in the past one-year. Employment generation has also increased by 50 percent. Before the establishment of BFC around 8,000 people were employed in the foundry units that has now increased to around 12,000.

On the export side, the industry has posted 600 percent growth - increased from Rs 50 crore to Rs 350 crore. Revenue-wise, 75 percent growth was seen from Rs 400 crore to Rs 700 crore.

GROWTH LADDER

"Export of castings from Belgum is expected to increase to Rs 450 crore by the next fiscal year. Moreover, the city is among top 10 producers of casting in India and its share to country's export is significant," informed Ram Bhandare, chairman of BFC. He is also the founder and chairman of AKP foundries.

Both MN Acharya, chairman of Abhishek alloys and Vinay Jathar, chairman of JP Foundry acknowledged that productivity of their firms has increased by over 50 percent. Earlier, their quantum of casting production was around 300 crore which has now crossed 400 crore. Mr Bhandre informed that his company's export has increased by over 30 percent in the last one year.

HALL OF FAME

"BFC has quality testing laboratories enabled with advanced optical emission spectrometer (OES) and 3D coordinate measuring machine (CMM); common tool room; simulation, 3D modelling and ERP software modules; common effluent treatment plant (CETP) which have changed the order book of these foundry units,"
said Mr Kale

He further added that the project has also helped in improving the basic infrastructure of the industrial area with resurfacing of roads and construction of drains.

"The hall of fame of BFC is the sand reclamation plant, the first of its kind in India, which can recycle 10,000 tonne of sand per month. This cuts costs and saves the foundry units from purchasing sand," explained Mr Kale.

Reiterating Mr Kale's statement, Mr Acharya said, "Sand is a major raw material used in preparing casting models." Earlier, he used to purchase 25 tonne of sand every year. "Recycling sand is cost effectiveness and has increased productivity," he added.

Facilities like advanced CMM have helped the foundries in producing casting with a higher degree of accuracy and the purity of products is maintained using OES. "The risk of rejecting end products due to poor quality and defects has reduced with usage of high-end and technologically advanced machines at BFC," stated Mr Jathar of JP Foundry.

INTO THE FUTURE

After carving a niche market for itself in the country by being the first dedicated cluster for foundries, the chairman has plans to bring global recognition to Belgaum.

"Our next challenge is to make the city a global sourcing hub for casing and machined components, as India is attracting more orders from Europe and North American countries," explained Mr Bhandare.

With increasing opportunities for export and rapidly changing technology used in casting industry, foundry units in Belgaum feel the need to upgrade themselves technologically. "United Nations Industrial Development Organisation's (UNIDO) financial aid of $2 million for upgradation of technology and productivity enhancement of BFC is a blessing in disguise for foundries in the city," claimed Mr Bhandare.

In order to deal with the shortage of skilled labourers, the chairman said, "We have proposed a training centre for labourers and supervisors as foundries in Belgaum are falling short of trained workforce." He informed that the training centre would be set up with help of National Skill Development Corporation.

"The existing workforce are being trained to acclimatise with new technologies and processes with the help of the Union ministry of micro, small and medium enterprises and using the expertise of KLS Gogte Institute of Technology, Belgaum," he added.

Spelling out the future plans of BFC further, Mr Bhandare said, "Greater emphasis will be given on energy conservation and reducing pollution level for which they are roping in UNIDO and Tata Environmental Research Institute (TERI). More environmental friendly and energy saving procedures would be adopted with the suggestion of the above agencies."

According to BFC chief executive - SM Kale, the objective behind establishing foundry cluster was to strengthen the existing infrastructure and expand it further with a view to enhance efficiency, competitiveness, raise export capabilities and make the industry environment-friendly by reducing pollution. "We have achieved this objective to a large extent, but we need to take steps to reduce pollution," he observed.

Expressing concern Mr Kale said that the foundry men were not utilising the reclamation plants optimally, due to which threat on environment is still lingering. "The industries dump used sand on road side, which is polluting the environment. "Hence clusters have taken this issue seriously and have made a strong point to all the owners," he informed.

Mr Bhandare said that the BFC has also proposed to setup a lab approved by the National Accreditation Board for Testing Calibration Laboratories, which is needed by the industry for certification of jobs.

In another part of the city, at the Servo Controls Aerospace office in Udyambag — Belgaum’s industrial area — prototypes of an aircraft wheel, actuators and valves line the conference room table. The company — which started out of a garage in Belgaum in 2002 — made the wheel for HAL’s Saras aircraft, sensors for the Chandrayaan moon mission and supplies valves for Airbus’s A-380 aircraft.

Servo Controls, which has a staff of 180 people, works like any global multinational, claims director Dinesh Dhadoti. “We have flexi-times and a hierarchy-free work environment,” he says.

Aerospace, clearly, looks set to take flight in the city. Aerospace engineering firm Quest Global Inc has built a 262-acre aerospace special economic zone (SEZ) on the outskirts of Belgaum. “The SEZ is expected to create 7,000 jobs,” says Basavaraj Sugandhi, manager, administration, Quest. The company already runs two units — with 200 employees — out of the SEZ.
