Naha city by rail, Okinawa

The beginning:
Naha Airport station 那覇空港駅: The Yui rail begins right at the largest airport in Okinawa Prefecture

Onoyama park station 奥武山公園駅: many fairs and festivals are held in this area. A new baseballs stadium was recently opened in April (Okinawa Cellular Stadium Naha)

Asahibashi station 旭橋駅

from access okinawa site

Kencho-mae station 県庁前駅: As its name suggests, this station stops right next to the Okinawan government main building, which is also at the edge of Kokusai-dori, the most famous tourism district on the island

Miebashi station 美栄橋駅: also near Kokusai-dori

Makishi station 牧志駅: also near Kokusai-dori. Trivia - Namco's Soul calibur character, Maxi, is simply another romanization of Makishi, a common Okinawan surname.

From LoveNaha site and Kensuke.net

Asato station 安里駅:

Omoromachi station おもろまち駅: This connects to the Shintoshin area (new city center), which was formerly occupied by the US military base, but now returned to Okinawa and turned into a booming commercial area

Currently Shuri was merged into Naha city, and the area is often referred to as Shuri-Naha. While Naha is the bay area, Shuri is the overlooking mountainous area as most castles in Okinawa are on top of a mountain. From the train, you can some what see Shuri Castle

I always read that Naha is less urban than the rest of Japan but it doesn't look like it.

oh you never been?

Okinawa has the population of Aomori, but crammed into small islands. most of which is in okinawa island alone! that combined with alot of land taken by large bases.. you get density and tall buildings in Naha!

The actual urban density isn't just Naha, but as a metropolis.. it extends south into Urasoe and parts of Itoman, and as far north as Kadena (and by this time you would pass two large bases, Futenma and Kadena)

of course it is no tokyo or osaka
maybe closer to some Saitama city.

I was stationed in Okinawa a few years ago. I miss it so much. I prefer Nago over Naha, however.

Here are some videos of the Naha Monorail. I can't wait to visit Okinawa again when the Yui Rail extension opens!

Went there a few weeks ago. It's efficient, and a good way to see the city from above.

You can download all photos here. The day photos were taken between Prefecture Office/Kencho Mae station and Shuri station. They are just normal shots taken by cell phone. In one of the vídeos you can hear a funny music before each station. Also, I didn't want to photograph people, that's why I have few photos inside. The day ticket costed 800 ¥.

Is there an opening date yet for the extension? Will it be in September or October or sometime later?
