I have a big balcony, but use it surprisingly rarely. Put my extra bike on it and that's about it... but I do love having the balcony door open in the summertime.

I have a small outdoor table and chairs, BBQ stove, flowers pots and hanging baskets in the balcony. In the patio, its pretty much the same arrangement except there is no BBQ stove and I put my 5 bikes in the garage.

And I have 2. One expensive one that needs a ton of work and one cheap one that I can afford to get stolen. I have quite a big balcony. Cumulatively I'm on it only a few hours/week but go out there a number of times/day (except in winter).

When I was still working I hardly used the balcony and patio except did some BBQ in the summer, now I have time and enjoy both places more and I've just given them a good scrubbing and washing yesterday.

On the first hot day I'll give it a good scrubbing. I'm pretty attentive about chasing pigeons off, but they have managed to make stealth attacks and leave their calling cards all over the place.

We don't have pigeons luckily or I would need to wash the balcony everyday, the crows are everywhere tho but they seem to be only interested staying on the big trees in the front and not those bushes and small trees in the back. There are many small birds flying around in the back and even singing, may be because we have a bird feeder in the patio.

I don't know. I like the indoors. In most cities balconies are a lot of work to keep clean, because of the dust. They also tend to be one of the most expansive parts of the buildings to maintain as the building ages. Having large openable windows should be more than enough to get fresh air and light in. Mostly you don't want too much fresh air or light in your appartment anyways. Direct sun light ruins everything it falls on and can also make it super hot. Fresh air comes with dust and, mostly, the wrong humidity and temperature. I try to fully open my window twice a day and otherwise keep it all closed with light curtains drawn. But maybe I am weird.
