I was in Ahmedabad this week and while walking around I was seeing so much potential this old town has... so happy to see that something is happening here and that the people who make their living in this area are also not forgotten!

There is definitely some progress in the landscaping near the Bhadra Fort. Glad to see that they have'nt cut down the tress (according to the original design). If possible will try to visit the place to get some pictorial updates...

This was in 2010

This is how it was supposed to look like

Ahmedabad: Bhadra set to have a royal look soon

Remember Akbar and Jodha walking by the water channel in the garden of their palace in the film ‘Jodha Akbar’? If everything goes according to the plans of Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation, then soon, the city’s Bhadra monument will be beautified with a water channel and fountain, typically found in the Mughal gardens of the country. The project was initially slated to be completed by April this year. However, it got delayed due to several reasons.

The civic body, which is working on flooring and developing the pedestrian space in Bhadra premises, will begin work of constructing the water channel and fountain. It will be built on the space where UCO Bank building and Karanj women police station operated. However, this will materialise only in the second phase, after the area of UCO Bank building is barricaded.

An official of heritage department of AMC requesting anonymity said, “The barricades will be extended till UCO bank building for which police commissioner has already issued a notification for traffic diversion.”

Surrounded by encroachment, the Bhadra premises remained largely neglected till recently. “The basic idea was to give a royal touch to the monument which is now protected by the Archeological Survey of India (ASI). Many of the Mughal gardens have water channels and fountains. Bringing that element to Bhadra would add to its charm,” said another heritage official of AMC.

The official further said, “When we referred to history books, we found that the fort premises had orange trees. The same environment will be re-created by planting citron trees in the pedestrian space.” Some of the saplings were planted during monsoon season last year, the official added.

The construction of pedestrian area from Bhadra to Teen Darwaja is one of the many phases of the entire project that is being implemented under Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission (JNNURM). It includes development of a public plaza and pedestrian space from Bhadra Fort to Teen Darwaja, restoration of the fort itself, development of Azamkhan Sarai area, a pedestrian bridge connecting Bhadra fort to the Sabarmati riverfront and multilevel parking space at Lal Darwaja.

An underground survey for Bhadra project

Penetrating Radars (GPR) to map underground utilities

Source

The Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) seems more than eager to learn from its mistakes as far as its projects are concerned.

So, to ensure that the second phase of the Bhadra restoration project does not face problems like it did in the first phase, the civic body has decided to carry out a survey to identify underground utilities through the Ground Penetrating Radar (GPR) system.

“Unfortunately, we don’t have data of underground utilities of the early times for which it is becoming difficult to carry out the project smoothly. So, for this, the GPR system has been thought of, which would enable us to identify the laid wires and cables,” said municipal commissioner Guruprasad Mohapatra.

The survey of identifying the wires and its depth will be carried out by Olive Infrastructure and Logistics at a cost of Rs5.73 lakh. For the second phase, the AMC will carry out digging and construction work from Karanj police station till Teen Darwaza. However, many underground utilities exist at the place, which could cause an obstruction.

“As lots of live cable wires were unearthed for the first phase from the Bhadra temple to the Karanj police station, we had to make an alternate arrangement. And, this delayed the project,” said an AMC official requesting anonymity. Moreover, the discovery of live wires led to some changes in the design of the plan, which led to the delay of the project.

But, for the second phase, the AMC would ensure that no such hurdle arises again. The entire Bhadra project costs Rs78.05 crore.

[email protected] to expand, hawkers fume

source: DNA

Their business affected badly during phase 1, hawkers dread more losses as work on phase 2 will begin soon.

The first phase of Bhadra restoration project is almost complete and phase two is set to begin soon. However, while the civic body seems happy, the same cannot be said about 500-odd vendors and hawkers from Bhadra to Teen Darwaja.

For the second phase, the area from Karanj police station to Teen Darwaja will be barricaded. AMC commissioner Guruprasad Mohapatra said, “The work for phase one is almost complete and barricading for the second phase is likely to begin by the end of this month.” The AMC has barricaded the area from Bhadra temple to Karanj police station under phase 1, for which the revised deadline was May 2013. “But now, as 95% of the work is over, we are all set to begin the work of phase 2,” said an official of AMC’s heritage department .

Around 10,000 sq metres of area will be blocked for the second phase, covering a distance of around 150 metres. Since the second phase is scheduled to begin shortly, the civic body, in its letter to the commissioner of police on May 23, had requested for police protection.

The AMC official said, “We will barricade the area from Premabhai hall to Teen Darwaja.
The road from Nishant restaurant to Teen Darwaja will be closed for commuters. Vehicular movement from Pankor Naka will be stopped, but people can walk till Teen Darwaja. No vehicles will be allowed from Italian bakery and it will be declared pedestrian zone till the project is over.” The official also clarified that only the hawkers on the road will be removed and not the shops.

Speaking to dna, inspector of Karanj police station, MM Makwana said, “We have started informing vendors and are trying to create pressure on them so that they vacate the place and don’t create any trouble when the barricading work starts.” He added that they have also started videography of the vendors to keep a record in case any ruckus takes place during barricading.

Some of the vendors and hawkers in the area seem to be upset with civic body’s move.
One of the vendors selling lemonade, Majidkhan Pathan, said that they have been asked to move towards Pankor Naka, which already has many hawkers. With the barricading of phase 1, many vendors are already witnessing around 30-40% fall in sales, he said, adding that their sales will drop further by 50-70% after fencing for second phase is done.

Since work on the second phase is expected to be completed by November, vendors believe major festivals like Diwali and Eid will not be good for them.

While some of the vendors are ready to shift peacefully, a few are enraged and determined not to move.

All the 1,000-odd vendors from Pankor Naka to Lal Darwaja are registered under Self-employed Labour Organization (SLO). Speaking to dna, the treasurer of SLO, who also owns a stall in front of Italian Bakery, Iqbal Kaji said, “We’ll try our best to ensure that barricading for phase 2 goes smoothly. Many vendors are enraged while quite a few are ready to shift temporarily.”

Kaji said that when the vendors were removed during phase 1 barricading, the civic body told them that they could carry out their business at the footpath opposite IP mission school. “But a few days later, AMC removed us from the footpath when residents complained that they wanted the footpath to be clear. Because of this, many vendors felt cheated and are planning not to co-operate with AMC,” added Kaji.

Dont deface Shaukat Maidan

Bhadra residents ask AMC to stop construction at the ground. They claim it has played an important role in struggle for freedom

Source

Ahmedabad Municipal Corporations Bhadra plaza development plan has hit a road block after local residents protested against the civic bodys attempt to construct a control room at Shaukat maidan. The Aleef Masjid Namazi Khidmat Committee on Monday met municipal chief Guruprasad Mohapatra demanding that the construction on the historical maidan should be stopped immediately.

The committee consisting of AMC opposition leader Badruddin Sheikh,Mohammed Hussain,Irfannudin Saiyed,GP Chaiwala and others handed over a memorandum in this regard to Mohapatra.

This maidan is used by people to offer namaaz on various occasions.Any kind of construction here will destroy the beauty of the Aleef masjid and hurt peoples sentiments. Moreover, the maidan has an historical significance, said Firoz Khan Pathan, convener of the committee.

According to the committee the maidan had played an important role during the Independence movement. In fact,Gandhiji had held a meeting at Shaukat Maidan to mourn the death of freedom fighter Lokmanya Tilak. Also, the maidan is witness to communal harmony. When the communal tension was high in the city during the Rath Yatra of 1994,the then mahant of Jagannath temple Rameshwar Prasadji,Maulana Alhaj Abdul Baki and Jumma Masjid Peshimam Nizamuddin hoisted the national flag at the maidan to spread the message of unity and harmony, Pathan said.

The maidan has been named after one of the freedom fighters who were close to Mahatma Gandhi.Maulana Shaukat Ali and his brother Maulana Muhammed Ali were close to Gandhiji and played an active role during the freedom struggle. After Independence, the maidan was named after Shaukat Ali while the road from Gandhi road to Khas Bazaar was named after Muhammed Ali, Pathan added. The ground is also used to host one of the largest Iftar parties which is attended by both Hindus and Muslims in large numbers.

WILL CONSIDER THE REQUEST

Mohapatra has assured the committee that he will look into the matter and resolve the issue. The Aleef Masjid committee members have opposed the construction taking place at the Shaukat Maidan. AMC had planned to build a control room on the ground. It wouldnt have marred the beauty of the masjid. But since the locals have objected to this,I will instruct the officials to check if it is possible to locate the control room somewhere else.

Just an observation...

The name of the thread should be changed from "App" to "Under Construction" or "U/C" just like other threads as its no more just approved, the work has started and I should say Phase 1 almost done.

After stutters, Bhadra revamp gathers steam

Source

ON FAST TRACK: Nearly 60% of the civil work has been completed around the Bhadra plaza

The Bhadra plaza is finally taking shape.Nearly 60% of the civil work has been completed around the plaza and the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) is hopeful that the site will eventually regain thelookithad 100 years ago.Prolongeddelaysin approvals from various agencies had led to the postponement of the project,AMC officials say.

The project is being implemented under the Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission (Jn NURM) which requires that projects be finished in a timebound manner, says a senior AMC official.Three months ago, theJnNURMcommitteehad nearly resolved to stop funding the project. The municipal commissioner had to personally persuade the committee that the project would be finished in time.

Agencies like the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI ) and the National Monument Authority (NMA) were required to pass the design of the project. We began work when the design was passed by the NMA and the ASI, says municipal commissioner Guruprasad Mohapatra. The second problem was the re-location of hawkers who do business around the plaza. We had conducted a biometric survey of the hawkers in 2010, says Mohapatra.
Wehave assignedthesehawkers to specific spaces within the plaza.

Very few of the hawkers will be accommodated at an alternative site on the riverfront. We have categorized the hawkers under ethnicwear, jewellery, eateries and other categories, says Mohapatra. Each category has been given adequate space. Another problem which is being worked outisthetemporary translocation of the Lal Darwaza bus station.
